We understand that on the occasion of the af frei bazaar in aid of the Canton Flood Reliel Fund, which is to commence on Friday week management of the electric tramways will maintain the service of ears up to a am, sich dky.
Bas the clock-tower, which rears itself so con, spicuously above the surrounding din and bustle | in Queen's Road Central, and whose purpose has pever been baderstood, even by the oldest inhabitant, suddenly decided" to become ra beacon for this limping home in the late hours of an evening? asks a correspondent. Last night, the four dials were so brilliantly illa minated that the hour and minute bands could be distinguished at Kowloon. At first it seemed as if one were the victim of an optical delusion, For years the resident in Hongkong bas vainly endeavoured to discover the exact time after dark by straining his eyes and cricking bie nécic in the direction in which it was supposed that ope or the other faces of the clock was situated. But it was a vain seacch, for all that could be distinguisbed was a dim glow sug gestive of a young 'moon in extremis. · Last pight, however, a change had come over the

CONFIDENOR said Lord Chatham, "is a plant of slow, growth. People believe in things that they seo, and in a broad sense they are right. What is sometimes called blind faith is not faith at all There must be reason and fact to form a foundation for trust. To regard to HE Steamship medicine or remedy, for example, people ask Has it cured others? Have cases like mine been relieved by It? Is it in harmony with the truths of modern science, and has ita record above suspicion? If so, it is worthy of confidence; and if I am ever attacked by any of the maladies for which it is, commended 1 shall ‘resort toʻst in full bolief in its power to help ma.". On there liner
WAMPULE'S PREPARATION has won its high reputation among medical men, and the people of all civilized countries. They trust it for the same reason that they trust in the familiar laws of nature or in the action of common things. This affective remedy is palatable as honey and contains all the nutritive and curative properties of Fure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from freab cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. It quickly emdicates the poisonous, disease-breeding acids and other toxic matters from the system; regulates and promotes the normal action of the organo, gives vigorous appetite and digestion, and is. infallible in Prostration-following Fevers, Asemia, Scrofula, Influenza, Wasting Diseases, Throat and Lung Troubles, etc. Dr. W. A. Young, of Canada, says: "Your tasteless pre- paration of cod liver oil has given me uniformly satisfactory results, my patients having been of all ages. It is a product of the skill and science of to-day and is successful after the old style modes of treatment have been appealed to in vain. To try it is to trust' to it forever after. It cannot disappoint you and is effective from the first dose. Sold by chemists everywhere.

claimed $500 damages from the defendants for `damage and trespass which took place at the ~Mäti Quarry, and for the value of discomposed granito alleged to have been removed by the defendants without the sanction of the plaintiff. Mr. E. J. Grist, of Messrs. Wilkinson and Grist, was for the plaintiff, Mr, F. B. L. Bowley, of Messrs. Dennys and Bowley, appeared for the defendants,
It was stated by. Mr. Grist that defendants' servants removed from plaintiff's quarry 5:562 cubic feet of decomposed granite, which was used for making road. The price of granite was three cents per cubic feet, which would make something like 5166.50. The quarry, Mr. Grist explained, was situated near the disinfecting mation at Yap-ma-ti and ran well into the roadway. Plaintiff could not estimate exactly how much granite défend. Bats servants removed. They knew he could not get the granite from any other place and as a matter of fact defendants ad- milled and were seen removing the stuff from this particular quarry, Consequently, plaintif were charging defendants for taking the whole. of the granite from the road. There were also damages for trespass, Mr. Grist went on to remark. The defendants were Government "contractors: Phey were engaged in imetalling, the road near the quarry and in order to do the work decomposed granite had to be procured, and it was procured from plaintiff's quarry without his consent. And the very fact that defendants' servants entered the quarry and by their presence prevented plaintiff's workmba from carrying out their work amount. ed to trespass, for bich plaintiff claimed damages.
The Court-Was thers a fight?
Mr. Grist said "No," because the men in charge of defendants' gang said they wore doing the work for the Government, d
Antier was sent to the defendants," Mfr. Grist proceeded, demanding payment for the gmofte. Defendants replied offering the sum of $5.80.. Subsequently plaintiff, sent them a bill for $50 and which they refused to payi otherwise there would bave been an end to the matter.
Witnesses for the plaintiff were then called and, axamined, each one corroborating the above statement, afte sich, a'counter-claim. for $500 was beard. This was-for-damager for rambying granite Sang, Lee Company's
