IUM IN ROOCHOW,
*THE SUPPRESSION MOVEMENT.”
The Foochow correspondent of the N. G. D.
the vary first Foochow au thorities have taken up the fight against opium. as though they were to earnest in their efforts to get rid of the drug. When the order was janned that all dent-be closed, there was apposition of every kind brought to bear against the movement, but in spite of all the influence which the friends of opium could bring to bear the deas were closed in Foochow to the number of over 500. The user was thus compelled to buy his opium and take it home to smoke it. All manner of means were used to evade the execution of this law. The temples were used for dens, and the house- boats on the river were 'called" into requisition for the same purpose. The anti-oplum society BOOD found out these retreats and appointed some thirty man to ferret out and report such places in the different parts of the city, Mr. Ling Hie-glog, a discendant of the great Viceroy, who brought on the 'opium war with England, was at the head of the movement and arranged with the officials that they should. punish in suitable ways those who were proved to have violated the opium laws; that the officers should appoint the police to go with the Com mittee and execute their orders by arresting those accused; and the Committea should be protected against persecution by the friends of opium. The Anti-opium Society was to defray the expenses of the nightly raids. Opium hospitalr were opened in different parts of the city where free treatment was given to those who desired to break off the habit. No opium could be bought except at stated places and every purs chase was recorded on a card which the pur chaser was provided with. The amount was limited and was 'continually decreased in quantily.
