AN ADVENTURE WITH A

PANTHER.

A correspondent writes to a contemporary;—— An exciting incident took place at Lalkun, dear Barielly, on the 13th instant, which I think de- serves recording, Shme scouts of the 12th Lan cers were in the Black Forest for the purpose of training, when one of the scouts, Corporal Spender, proved once again the resource and pluck for which the British soldier has aver been renowned. While passing through the for. est he came upon a large black panther; im- mediately bringing his rifle to, his shoulder he fired, wounding the animal seriously. The beast crept away into the undergrowth, and the Corporal warned the men is his vicinity not to go near-it until it was dead but one neo- commissioned officer, Sergeant Vass, paid no attention to this wise advice and approached too near. The panther immediately came ou and leaped straight for the Sergeant before he could gain cover. The Sergeant turned to get behind a tree, but slipped, and the panther was on him. Two shots failed to stop the panther and Corporal Spender immediately advanced, and placing the barrel of his rifle against the animal's shoulder, fired again,

The beast rolled over dead; but when they found the poor victim, he was very much.torn. His scalp was lord is three places, and his left forearm was fractured and severely billen, as was also his hip. The scouts bandaged him up as well as they could with their shirts and

handkerchiefs and managed to get him on to a train, which they pulled up by landing on the line,"waving their helmets and jackets.
