of Egyptian conquerors; the research work re cently carried out has revealed a nativa civilisa tion of which there is no documentary record and concerning which conjecture has been at fault. Is the period when Egypt was an appanage of Rome the territory south of Phil was much neglected, and it was precisely at this period that Nubian civilisation appears to have reached its highest point. Egypt became Christianised in the second and third centuries A.D., but Nabia remained pagan; Coristianity seems not to have been adopted by the Ethiopians of the Nile Valley until the sixth century. It had become established by the time the Moslems conquered Egypt in the saventh century, and Christian kingdoms continued to exist in the Soudan until the fourteenth century, when Saf ed din Abd Allah en Nasir (a truly Purtian name meaning Sword of the Faith, Abd Allah the Victorinus) captured what is now called Old Dongela.
TWO YEARS' EXCAVATIONS, The story of the Christian kingdom of Dongola is more or less known; what has bas a hitherto unsuspected is the high degree of culture which existed among the peoples far- ther north; from the first century, D.C. to this fourth century A.D. Excavations have been

Garstang for the University of Liverpool; Pro- famor J. H. Breasted, of Chicago (both of whom have discovered or cleared Egyptian temples ad cemeteries), and by Mr. Randall-Maci ver, Zimbabwe Tulus 10 Kesians investigated the Association meatings in South Africa,
It is to Mr. Maciver, who went out for the University of Philadelphia, that the most strik- ing discoveries are due. In the seasons of -1905-7, and 19-7-8. (tho laní just endad) he has made discoveries ranging over some twenty centuries. Near Amada he found an Ethiopian city of the Sails period (about 80ɔ B.C.). But it is to the early centuries of the Christian 'em. that-the-mes-interesting discoveries belong. These include necropoli, temples, and palaces, strange sculptures, inscriptions in the still undeciphered Mercitic script, glass work, and pottery, exhibiting numeroise new geo- metrical, floral, and animal' décorative de aigaa A special prize was a beautifully carved casket in ebony and ivory, R. is an yet too early to be able to judge the full significance of these discoveries, but it is certain that the people who evolyed this civilization were negroes, They owed something certainly to the active commercial intercourse they carried on with Egypt daring the. Græco-Roman period, but part at least of their civilization was of indigenous growth. Later on it was modified by Christian influence and at a sliti later time by Mohammedanism.
It may be added in this connection that there
