carrying his method too far. But for wealth of
artangement, for imagination, for hue and tone and unconventionat, conventionalism. this picture is to be ranked with Mr. Brangyn's
Not less cryptic is Mr. Sims's "Fonolain," which has rightly been purchased for the Chantrey Collection, but it is cool in colour where the other is warm, elegant where the other is opulent, delicate and pearly where the uther, is rich and strong. To the mystery.of. these there could be no greater contrast, than the powerful, 'amphatic realism of Sir Hubert von Herkomer's vast picture representing The Council of the Royal Academy, 1902,* resolved into a Selecting Committee, of the Whole House, and engaged in judging the works brought belure them. It is just a simple row of men. That we who know them are
prepared to bear witness to the striking 'rasam- blance, both in feature and form, though a good deal, is not the chief part.
The merit of this extraordinary effort is that for any baholder-who must look at it from the
proper distance--these figures are all alive, are all full of character, and ara of flesh and blood under the strong top light which illuminas them. This is true history-painting, a painting for posterity of something which the artist has himself seen; and not what he has invented, like Mr. Bundy's clever Gavalier and Round. head picture, The Sands of Life, or Mr. Say mour Lucas' bigbly dramatic and admirably painted Silence ! sixteenth-century Duc du-Guise subject-or any of the other recon- structions of history that you may see upon the walls.
PAINT AND FORTRY
When we come to the poetic creations it is an entirely different matter, to Mr. Solomon's "Eva" it is not the historic incident of the creation of the First Mother that interests nei

his treatment of it.in its realisation. The quiet beauty of the colour, the lovely line of the composition carried from the fuely-grouped curves of the angels floating above on their -rounded wings, through the fair sinuous body of the graceful Eve whom they sustalo, down into the Watts like figure of Adam, who lies prons below. The light emitted from hịa side is a pretty conceit; the real problem of the picture is in the colour and the line, and in both the painter has triumphed. A deeper, be cause a more personal and human, interest is found in Mr. Stott's picture, of a mother and baby, called "The Kiss"-passionate in ita sestiment and beautiful in its broken colour-
