THE VALUE OF SHARES"
To the Editor of the
"NORTH-CHINA DAILY NEWS.* Sir-Will you permit me to throw some light on the obscure point rained by "Not a Victim"! in your to-day's issue? Ag
There is nothing so conducive to a final
solution of a problem as to have arguments realizing this, I au grateful to your correu brought forward for and against its merits, and
pondeat for having kindly stepped into the
arena.
The first question your correspondent aski-, as to why a share should fall in price because its divided earning.capacity has been reduced by about forly per cont (although the value nf the Company's assets remain unchanged) is so amateurish that it is difficuls to conceive that any one but a child, or a man, wholly uniq quainted with financo, can have any doubts on the subject. It is the fundamental law gover ning all stocks in London, New York, Paris and all the world over, including Shanghal, but for the sake of enlightening "Not a your to make it clear to him why it is so. Victim" I shall, with your permission, endes
Granted that the arsets of the Company in question are as stated by your correspondent and also (ashe would seem to admit) that the
Steam Launches of Steel or Wood, Lighters, Steel Buildings and Roofs, Bridge dividend which the Company will cara this Work, and all kinds of Machinery are made on the premises.
Tenders will be made up when required and the workmanship and fmaterial will be guaranteed.
The cokof Docking, and repair work, will be found to compare favourably with that of any port in the world.

year will be reduced to ten Taels, it follows Tis. 230 will only get a return of 41 per that any investor, who buys these shares ai
cent on his investment. I do not think it is necessary to discuss the question as to the probability of any hood fide investor coming forward to bay, shares, at such prices, with such prospects. If there are buyers of shares at these prices it must be for quite another object than for obtaining such a divid end for they could obtain a much better return by purchasing shares in many other concerns, the assets of which are just as valuable as those of the S. & H. Wharf Co
That is the reason why such a price as 230 Taels for S, & H. Wharf shares, at the present time, is a wholly fictitious ore.
