"This is not a housekeeper's list from the grocer and corn merchant, It is simply a Matement made last math before the Royal Commission Whiskey, by Mr. Arthur, John Tedder, Chief Inspector of Excise, of the kind of materials used in the manufacture of the spirit in the United Kingdom.

** It is's largo list, Mr. Tedder," remarked Mr. Laurence N. Guillemard, C.B, the deputy chairman of the Board of Jalaud Revenue, in a tone that might almost have been taken for surprise," and I conclude that there is no legal restriction as to the materials' from which the spirit can be manufactured."

It is to these models that the witness turns now and again to explais certain points that ere raised, and, in addition, the Commissioners are furnishes with sketches' and plans with which they are able to follow still more closely the technical parts of his evidence.

WHAT THE COMMISSIÒN WANTS 10 Kaow.

The character of Mr. Tedder's évidence was indicated by Mr. Guillemard at the opening of the proceedings. The sort of information the Committee want to hear as a preliminary step, be said, is:-

1. What the different spirite are;

2. What materials they are made from ; 3. What are the processes of manufacture; and

4. Taking the finished product, what super vision is exercised by the Excise from the manufacture right through to the consumer.........

The questions which were then put to Mr Tedder were such as enabled him to follow these proposed lines and evidence pretty closely.

Millions of figures were the beginning of the evidence. Fifty millions of gallons of proof spirit being, it was elicited, the quantity made in a year, and 17.03,000 the amount of duty paid. Then the witness gave the number of distilleries:

+

England.~8 (3 pol patent still and 5 patent),

• Scotland,—150 (137 pot still, 3 pɔ and patent, and to patent),

Irsiand.-27 (18 pat still, 7 pat and patent, and a patent)............

As to the materials used in the manufacture, which are quoted at the Ieginning of this re- „port, the fall swing farther information was given as to the quantities employed, namelý ;--*
