I turned round, and at that instant he-fired-with-a-revolver at the King, who fell back on the cushions with- aut uttering a word. I asked him whether he was hurt, but he did not reply. As you are no doubt aware the year has been one of deplorable depression all' round, and cotion spinning in thọ East-bas suffered pro-' portionately. It has, in fact, been the worst year experianced for some considerable-time, the unsatisfactory position being mainly attri butable to the following adverse circumstances: -The consumption in the river ports was ab-- normally small, no doubt as a result of the failure of the crops in 1905 and the consequent famine, the effects of which are still being folt severely along the whole Yangise Valley, Also, formerly a very brisk trade in cotton goods, woven from our spinnings, was done with Manchuria. But since the Japanese have obtained the predominating influence in that province, this has been almost entirely closed- to us. Furthermore, the bigh rate of exchange ruling at the beginning of the year was very much in favour of Japanese and Indian spin- nings, and in October, when Exchange dropped, the stocks of indian yarns were so enormous, that local spinnings were almost out of the market. The new cotton crop for some time looked exceedingly bad and though it rallied a little, the fibre was very lacking la strength.
Owing to the unsatisfactory position of the yar market thoughout the year_several.of. our oldest customers had to suspend pryment, and we were obliged to resell our production with a heavy loss, at a time when Godown ware filled to overflowing, and could only be tempted by substantial concessions. Owing to the entire absence of demand, we had to carry during the entire your stock ranging from 4,000 to 5,oco bales. In view of the very ocártala position of the "trada"
