British authority, that the Club was closed down. The Club was closed through the Chinese going to the Club with their $40 and being unable to get their watches. The Club had been going. to pieces for weeks) it was rotten when, it was takon over and went worse from weak to "week, until action was taken by the Crown, The Crown Advocate' proceeded to explain in detail the manner in which the Watch Club bad been run. Out of 81 clubi, supposed to be running at the time Mr. Thomas was arrested, not a single club had 40 members in it, and this, counsel said, was

One of the 8t clubs had three members only, some bad fifteen members, -others-more, but not one had 40,members, and this Mr Thomas could not help knowing. As to bow the business of the Watch Club was conducted under his management, Mr. Wil kinson said he purposed calling Mr. H. J. Black who was silentioned in the indictment.
