'Tis the Yong of man's life, this song of the bells,

"MARK TWAIN AT A “PONCH”
DINNER...
HIT DROKE ME ALL UP.”
What happens at the "Wednesday dinners of Mr. Punch" is usually reserved for those posthumous volumes of recollection which so o ten fail because the contents have been kept too fang in bottle. Mr. Clemens has just revealed in': a speech to the Lobs Club of New York the way in which the famous paper féted him when he was over here last autumn; and' we call the report from the "New York Tri bune, Mark was giving off a string of the greatest compliments that had ever been paid him, and among them was the following

We were about to begin dinner when the toastmaster said: "Just a minute, there ought to be a little ceremony." Then, there was that meduating silence for a while, and out of a closet thrie cams a beautiful little gitl dressed in pink, holding in her hand a copy of the previous week's paper, which had in it my cartoon. THE TRUTH" ALWAYSṀ "When you are in doubt tell the truth." It was an experienced old diplomat ho said this to a beginner in the work. It may pass in some things, but not in business. Fraud and decep tion are often profitable so long as concealed: yet detection is certain sooner or later; then comes the smash-up and the punishment. The best and safest way is to tell the truth all the time. Thus you make friends that stick by you, and a reputation that is always worth twenty shillings to the pound-everywhere-your-goods are offered for sale. We are able modestly to Affirm, that it is on this basis that the world: wide popularity of

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION resis, The people have discovered that this medicine is exactly what it is said to be, and that it does what we have always declared it will do. Its nature also has been frankly made known. It is palatable as honey and contalus, all the nutritive and curative properties of Pure, Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of HONGKONG HORTICULTURAL
lypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. À combination of supreme excellence and medicinal merit. Nothing has been so successful in Anemia, Scrofula, Bron. chitis, Influenza, Loss of Flesh and Wasting Diseases, Weakness and Low Nervous Tone, and all complainis caused by Impurs Blood. Dr. Austin D. Irvine, of Canada, says: "I have used it in cases where cod liver oil
was indicated, but could not be taken by the patient, and the results following were very gratifying," It is effective from the first dose and agrees with the most sensitive and nervous stomachi, It cannot deceive or disappoint you, and comes to the rescue of those who have received no benefit from any other treatment. It stands for the medicinal triumphs of the age. Watch carefully against imitations." Sold by chemists throughout the world.

ANOTHER ANTI-CHINESË RIOT.
· IN CANADA.
There has been another anti-Chinese out- break in Canada. From latest Canadian papers to hand by the last mail we gather that, at Lethbridge, the interior of the Columbia re- staurant was partly wrecked one evening last ionth and the windows of neeily every other Chinese restaurant were mashed by a mob of several hundred persons. The affair took place quite, suddenly and the windows of the Alberta restaurant and Jos-Fong's were assail- ed at the sae time. Constable Rose telephoned for the mounted potice, a number of whom promptly arrived, cleared the premises and ‚afrested several of the mob, but ; of until" a
Chinaman or two had been roughly.handled, A police patrol cleared the street and went down to protect Quang, Wong's place near the- post office. Meanwhile a portion of the mob slipped round to the Baroness Road and smashed the front of a Chinese restaurant sear the Arlington. The mounted police came over and in a few minutes nothing was to be seen of any mob.
