The Singapore Bra Prats, of 14th insju devotes a leaderette to the seizure of the us, Tatau Maru No. 3, and, after quoting partics lars relating to the se'sure from the Hongkong Telegraph, commantelt will be seen from 'a special telestam from. Hongkong that the Carl Diederichsen, for Haiphong. Japanese Government have promptly demand-Delhi, for Shanghai. ed from the Chinese Government the release Kanchow, for Shanghai. of the Japanese steamer Taliu Maru, Red Fukushu Moru, for Swatow... on an alleged charge of carrying arms and Ammunition, inta. Chloese waters, iba pre- sumption being that these munitions were intended to be supplied to Chiness rebels. It is asserted on behalf of the Tatru Maru that the consigoment of arms and ammuni tion was being imported into Macao under manifest and bills of lading in the usual way of business, to the order of's will known him there. The contention was that the vessel'wai making for its port of destination and was approaching Macao, but was compell edito anchor and await a pilot as the tide did not serve. While thus at anchor the Chinese Customs officer, in a launch escorted by two gunboats, boarded the ship, put. armed sailors an the vessel, and conveyed her to Canton. In a statement given in connection with the telegram it will be seen that the lawyer for the Macao consignees maken out a strong case Against the arrest of the Tatṣu díaru, ospecial ly alleging that the Macan Government were cognisaal of the consignment being on board the Tairu Maru and had despriched a guard of Portuguese soldiers in a junk to protect the

THE OPIUM TADE.
Reporting on the trade of Bushire (Persia) for 1906-7, the British Vice-Consul reports an follows with regard to the opium trado i
The export of opium advanced 433,621 on 1905, but still fell short of the average. The British market proved much more satisfactory than the Chinese, and exports to London were £35,000 in excess of those in 1905. As usual much speculation ensued amongst Persian buyers, who, having advanced money to grow- ers, were compelled in, take up their purch ase and incurred substantial losses wher prices fell in Hongkong. As in the case of in: solube gun in Bombay the sale early in the year of some 200 cases, which reached Hong kong at 4,003 to 5,coo krans with favourable dollar.exchange in Bombay, led to the sending forward of large consignments from Busbire. As a sequel, for three months no sales were advised from Hongkong, and something like 700 to 800 chests are said to be still on the Hongkong market, Pr.ces in Bashire. ranged from 3,50 to 4,000 kranı (£67, la-f77) per cheat in accordance with a resolution of the Bombay Government, opium chests tranship. -ped via Bombay, are no longer required to -weigh 1403 ibi, but 140 lbs., the 1b for leaf and dust allowance having been abolished. The transhipment for leviable there is; for con. signments of wat nore than 150 chests, r per chest of 140 lb., and 2 s. 8 it. per chest of 70 lbs. The opium trade forms so large and "so profitable's 'part of the produce exported via Bushire that the imposition of an embargo by China on the imports of foreign opium wilt- undoubtedly hit many cultivators and merch. ants very hard at present native traders are incredulous as regards the proposals under discussion.
