Altogether the smallpox epidemic which zaged from 735 to 737 was a rare godsend for the Buddhist priests. In the latter year, in conséquence of this visitation, the Emperor decried that each of the provinces should erect a large monastery to be called Kokubunji, while shortly afterwards he ordered"
