The launch then steamed close to the Tatsu with the intention of buarding her and of suggesting to the Japanese skipper to strum into Macao roadway. To their surprise they were hailed by a Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs launch, through the megaphone, and told that no'oue was allowed to board the steamier which was under arrest, In effect, the Customs officials considered the Tune aprite. Baffled in his mission, the Assistant Harbour Master returned to Macao and reported the result of his, surprise to his superior officer.
Presumably acting under instructions from. the Provincial authorities at Canton, then Maru, under escort of two Chinese gunboats, the revenue cruiser Lung-tring and a Customs launch, was ordered to proceed to Canton,

Okumura, the local manager of the Japanese firm, had had no reppit from either tite Captain or the officers of the Tatsu Mare, his presumption. being that the officers had not yet been per mitted to place themselves in communication with the Hongkong office by telegram. Mr. Okumura informed our representative that his Chinese compradore returned Macao to-day and had no information beyond the fact that the vessel had been arrested. It was his firm's Intention to send a Japanese gentleman up 14 Canton to-night, there to confer with their Consul with a view to suitable representations being made to the Viceroy, to obtain the vessel's release.

With regard to the West River question; Sle John Jordan has informed the Waiwupu that H. M. Goverment will withdraw its warships if China agrees to pay the claims of British subjects plondered during the last few years, and if the Viceroy at Castão can'make effective and satisfactory arrangements to police tha landin waterway.
