The dredgerwas successfully brought across the Indian ocean and we were sent to Singapore to await her there and after waiting for a few days at that port the news came that the dredger bad left Penang. Of course I need hardly point out that a 1st class cruiser in not the ideal form of tug boat, and it therefore considerably taxed the ingenuities of the captain and commander to devise suitable means; but needless to say, the means were found and as it afterwards turned out a very excellent job was made of it.
The captain at the time was Capt. F. W. Fither (now a Rear-Admiral) and brother of the famous Sir John Fisher, and the. Com-- mander: A W. Ewart, afterwards H.B.M.'s Naval Attache at Berlin.
The result of all the planning, etc., was, that, we were successfully converted into a low-boat and ready to take the dredger in hand as soon

From the 2nd of Jan, to the 3rd we only made good 34 miles, which shows how bad the weather was, and from the 4th to 5th of Jan., we made good but 17 mile, a poor perform. ance for a 20-knot ship.
