TERRORS OF THE NIGHT

Colonel Patterson was an engineer, engaged on the construction of the Uganda Railway, we go with him to Tsavo, a hundred and thirty miles inland, which "had just then been reached by railhead." The making of the Uganda Railway was a fine bit of work, and what Colonel Pattemod has to say about that is very interesting, but it is his, incidentallion huot that captures us in these pages: p

Two most voracious and insatiableman-eating lions ap; cared upon the scene, and for over nine months waged an intermittent warfare, against the railway and all those connected with it in the vicinity of Tsayo. This culmin nted to a perfect reign of terror in December 1898, when they actually succeeded in bringing the railway works to a complete standstill for about three weeks...

On a morning soon after his arrival Colonel Patterson was poused and told that one of his "jemadats," a fine powerful Sikh, named Ungan Singh, had bees seized in his tent by a lion during the night, dragged off and cafer. A bed-fellow of the "jamadaf" selually, wit nested the occurrence.

He graphically described how, at about mid. night, the lion suddenly put its head in at the open tent door and seized'Ungan Singh-who happened to be meirer-by the throat. The unfortunate fellow cried out "Choro ""Let go"and 'threw his arms round the lion's neck. The next moment he was gone and his panic-stricken companions lay helpless, forced to listen to the terrible struggle which took place outside,..

HUNTER, AND HUNTED. Colonel Patterson, arming himself, went on THURSDAY,

the track of that lion, and so began this sting- SP.M., 5th Dec., 1907 gle between a human mind and iron courage on the one side, and animal craft and daring on the other. Sometimes Colonel Patterson had the co-operation of other officers and offi. cials, but the "deaths" fall to himself and his inflexible purpose. Think of the situation :
