The speech of Mr Moella; Director of the Commercial and Tadusitik) Boléxb, at the re- cent reception given him in Tokyo,, as briefly jeferred jo in our yesterday's isnug, is of more then ordinary intereat, and according to the Yominird it seems to have greatly impressed bla hearers. "Referring to the field for utensils used. for meals in india, the speaker pointed out that copper or brass was the chief constituent for such ware, and an enormous quantity of copper and brass for that purpose was imponed yearly; but, strangely enough, it was not Japan, which was a noted copper-producing country, that supplied these wares, Copper pro- duced in Japan would first go to Germany, of Australia, where it was "fashioned into the required materials and sent to India.
Turning to the rice trade, Hr. Morita'pointed. out that the Japanese were the principal cus 10 rers for Indian rice, but the Japanese bought

The speaker sext raferred to the trade in silk fabrica and knitted goods. Japan, he said, was spp. plying these sticles to a large extent, bui it was to be regretted that these Japanese goods wam only used by the middle and lower classes, while the upper classes in India were buying their silk" goods from France and their knitted goods from Germany. What is said to have made the greatest impression on the | audience, says the Tokyo journal, was the
following. The speaker, showing a large tumbler, stated that this glass was in daily use
in India. In India, where the best was more intense than in Japan, the quantity of lemonade is an ordinary bottle was larger than was usually supplied in Japan. A AND bottle would 6 that tumbler. He then took up an ordinary Japanese tumbler, and observed thaba certain japanese merchant sent such a small tumbler to India for sale. This

After speaking at length on other details, showing statistics in figures and samples, Mr. Morita concluded with the following state ment "Recently, one of the staff of the Cal- cutta branch of the Mitsui Bussan, Kaisha died. The remains were cremated, but in consequence of the difference in the Japanese and indian religious beliefs, inconvenience was experienc ed in carrying out the funeral ceremony. This gave an impulse for the demand for the es-958] tablishment of a cemetery for the exclusive use of Japanese.. The Indian Government offered to grant a lot of ground to an extent of about 1,200 tsubo, but of this only 300 trubo was accepted for the reason that the cost of an iron febcqt0 enclose the cemetery would amount to a "heavy" sum. Look at the instance of the Germans in Shanghai. They have recently erected a magnificent building for their club there. So magnificent and lofty is it that one can see the whole of the Chinese Empire at a glance. For pleasure purposes, they have built sech a large building, but the Japanese have appré ciated only 3:0 (sebo of land in India as the resting place for the martyrs of foreign trade."

11Y000 VILLAGE TERRIFIED: Tine story has been circulated in the life village of Nagata-mura, Hyogo, that a ghost appears there at a certain hour every night,' and of course the superstitious village folks, John Street, Bedford Row, W.C. especially the women and children, place im plicit belief in the story: It is said that they seldom venture out after dark. The place alleged to be haunted by the evil spirit is a bouse occupied by a man named Yamaguchi, and the spook is said to strike weird attitudes in'a somewbat unpoetic situation-the dustbin By the front gate.
A number of strong young men of the village determined to test their strength against the unwelcome visitor. Lots were drawn in the usual way, and a few nights ago one of the party was dispatched to the place, his duty being fint to investigate matters and see who- ther the spirit would come out, or pot.. He
remained near the dustbin, keeping strict watch, until past midnight. At about 2 o'clock what is described as a queer, faint. frame of a -being anddenly appeared appareatly from the depths of the dustbin. The face was ghostly and the bead was covered with long dishevelled bair. Whether the volunteer's hair" stood on end is not stated in the vernacular; but the youth apparently decided that the vicinity of the dustbin was no place for him, so he fled at full spred to the headquarters of the investigator. Op receipt of the information, the others quickly proceeded to the place, but the ghost had apparently seen them coming and had vanished. The receptacle was sub- sequently examined, but no trace of the gbont could be found.
