to eat or read 'and his sleep was of the mest fitful description. Even the gaolers were sorry for the pitiable condition to which this man had been reduced.

Ar usual everything that the rules of the g401 permit was allowed to him during the three weeks torable anticipations which he underwent. As a matter of fact in some re spects the rules were relaxed in bis favour, and the warders, who were appointed to that: spacial and unpleasant duty of looking after him, treated him as the child that he evidently appeared to be when the fall significance of the Bontence was understood by the coodemned

It bas already been stated that Adsetts had. attempted to take his life by dashing his bead against the walls of the cell. But from the information which is at our command it is impossible to convey any idea of the frantic state of the, accused during those weeks that he has lived. Being an Americap be doubtless thought that the law would be as slow, or rather a appears to be, in the
country from which hails, British justice is "quick--whether it is always zure is a different
question-but when it came to the point. Adretter behaved like a man and exhibited the characteristics which he probably obtained as marine in the ivice of the United States Government.

All his wailings and weepings were finished. He had already made bij confésion and he understood that it was impossible now to fight' -ngainst the law which had decreed him to a sentence--that of capital punishment—which the majority of people at the present day object to, but which nevenbeless is the law of England. At Give o'clock this morning, Adselli was pinioned by the executioner. He walked to

In one instance, that of a Chinaman who had used the drug for 14 years, the American by whom he was employed, after repeated soli, citations on the part of the Chinaman, took his case in hand. He told the Chicago simply to quit using it but to let him, the American, know when the craving caps upon him strong- ly. Three days after sweating off the Celes tial went to his employer and told him tha thing could be stood no longer. The Ameri- can gave him a hypodermit injection contaio ing some opium, which was repeated once or owice. Finally, utakaown to the Chinaman, he was receiving, injections of nothing but water, but imagination was strong and the cure proved o

Another story showing the awful the habit sometimes rakes is that of the mar grip which der of a Chinese provincial deafer is the drug. Two of the "fiends" who knew of his intention to go to a neighbouring town to purchase a large quantity of the drug, lay in wait for him. They let him pass them on the road with a big sum of money on bim, od bis way to buy the drag, leaving him unmolested then. On his return, however, with a large supply of the drug, they set upon and killed him, making away with all the qpital.
