With the growing taste of the last 25 years for the formation of collectioris of bric-a-brac, considerable interest has been attracted to the study of naval and military decorations, and medals, which were often consigned to the melting pot after the death of the recipient, are now carefully treasured and preserved. Need less to say, a collection of war medals, issued from the beginning of the pineteenth century down to the present day, formis an exceedingly interesting recard of the historical angagements

The folfaction of war medals is necessarily an expensive hobby, and to get together a re- presentative series requires a long purit add considerable energy. Many specimens are rare and difficult to obtain. The prices paid in 10- cent years have been subject to wide fluctua. lions, and it may be of interest to give some rough idea of the approximate values placed by collectors on the rarer specimens, though it should be noted that prices ruling at the pre- sent mbment are 'considerably less than they were two years ago, death having removed some of the keenest collectors of medals,,
