This introduction to passion fruit took place on a liner on the Australian coast. The ques tion I immediately pit to myself was, "Why |* have we not this delicious fult in England?" [9] I made inquities, and i was inform,d that it would not stand the sạa vo aga. I was further told an anecdote to the effect that Queen Victoria had a great desire to tasto all the fruits of her Empire, and that her wish had been gratified in regard to all but the passion fruit, which it had been found impossible to convey homs in good condition. I am not at all pre- pared to vouch for the correctness of this assertion ; on the contrary, I am much inclived to question. And in any case, it seems likely that the streetboy of to-day may be able to enjoy a luxury that, according to the story, was denied to his sovereign. For in the Orotava. has been sent to England a consigament of passion fruit, with a view to fering the possi bilities of trade. And if the venture proven satisfactory, I will take upon myself to pro phesy that in the course of a year or two the London public will be readily able to procure this charming fresit and that in'a year or two longer the coster will-be-selling it from his barrow.

by bee can buy first-class prusion fruit in most of the towns of Australia. Now this is a trade which has been very litla'worked up. If there "were a large export" demand Itcan hardly be doubted that passion fruit could be grown ex- ceedingly, 'cheap'y. The vice is very prolific. Many people grow it as a creeper over their ve tandahs, and its pretty flower is a lovely harbin. ger of the fruit that soon afterloads its twining limbs. Freight should not be a very import.
