The examination has shown that oil extracted from these needs of Aleurites Fordid is similar

in composition to the 'ung oil of commerce. It is, however, lighter in colour, and produces a lighter-coloured varnish on drying, so that it is probably a purer product. It is noteworthy also that it has a higher titer test than cam mercial T'ung oil. It was impossible, with the small amount of material available, to deter mine whether the oil of Aleurites Fordit, it prepared on 4 large scale by a commercial process, would be superior in quality and value- to the mixed wood-oil of commerce derived from the two species. Technical trials would. ba necessary in order to determine this point, and for such trials about two gallons of the oil,

ALEURITES TRILOBA,

The sample of the seeds of Aleurites triloba was also forwarded for examination to the Imperial Institute by the Superintendent of the Botanical and Forestry Department, who stated that Aleurites triloba is one of the best abade trees in Honong, where it grows very quickly. The seeds of this tree, which is frequently referred to in technical literature as Aleuritis maluccana (given as a synonyms for A. triloba in the Index Kewensis), are com mercially known as "candia nuts," and the – kergels are already_exported_trom Fill, New Zealand and Australia. The oil which they contain is uerd_for_soap-making and ether purposes, both in this country and on the Continent.

The sample consisted of four pounds of the sceds, the kernels of which were nearly while, and fres from .discolouration. The oll was extracted by means of light petroleum, and the kernels were found to cóptało 60.8 per cent, of oil, which is equivalent to a yield of 108 per cent, from the unsholled seeds. The oil Jried on exposure to air in thin films in about ton days.

The results indicate that the oil belongs to the class of drying oils typified by linseed oil, I would be suitable for the manufacture of tsoap and in the preparation of oil-varnishes paints and linoleum and other similar purposes, to which oils of this class ato applied In- dasirially. Samples of the nuts were submitted to brokers, who stated that the kernets would meet with a ready sale at £12 to £13 per ton, but pointed out that the unshelled nuts could
