SALLING THE PHILIPPINES.

·The New York Tribune says editorially: A correspondent of the Rochester, Democrat und Chronicle sends us a clipping of a letter which he has written to that paper on the "Disposal of the Philippines," with a sequest that we reprint and comment upon it... Brief- ly stated, he suggests that the United States should cade the Philippinós to Japan, and that in return Japan should pay the United States „în cash' the total cost of our acquiring and holding the islands, the amount to be deter mined by arbitration if necessary, should ac- quiesce in whatever immigration laws this country or any of its states might cunct, should adopt for barself the United. States Constita- tion so far as religions liberty is concerned, and should officially favour for acceptance of Christianity by all the people. Thus, he con- "cludes, thousands of millions of souls will be saved from an eternal kell,

is not in the real estate solilng business. In the second place, it would be a fearsome thing te incur the wrath of the anti-imperialists by thus-selling the people of those islands to an- other government without their consent. Third, we have no iden that the United States is in. danger of being consumed with a desire to get rid of the Philippines. Fourth, we have no assurance that Japan is sitting up ofnights in eagerness to acquire them. In the fifth place, while we are quite ready to submit some disputes to arbitra“ tion, after they have inevitably occurred, wa cannot approve the creation of disputes with a view, in advance, of having them arbitrated. In the sixth place, we have no idea Japan would assent to an abrogation "of her presept treaty rights and to invidious' discrimination 'ngainst her hereafter. Seventh, we have no idea that Japan would agree to the substitution of our Constitution for her own, even in part. Eight, it would seem to be slightly contradic- to the Beuth-Westory to ask Japan to adopt absolute religious of the Colony, freedom and equality and at the same time to

give official favour to one certain religion..

We may add, in the ninth place, the notion that war between America and Japan is the alternative to our surrender of the Philippines to that country seems to us entirely fadtastic and preposterous, and, in the tenth place, while we are heartily in accord with all efforts for the spiritual improvement of mankind, we “are not fully persuaded that the only possible escape from eternal forment is through. a. politically imposed or politically promoted form of worship. There are various ather reasons for dissenting from the ingenious views of our contemporary's correspondent, but-the weather is hot and our space is limited.
