The conductor, being only brusque by vinue of his office, add not inherently hard- hearted, consulted his watch, and discovering that he was a few minutes ahaad of time, delayed to assist the old dame.
•Labouring up sideways, crab-like, with (he ride, came a bivur, dingy barge, and the driver of the bus lit a cigarette and turned to waich its progress. Slowly, but cleverly, the two bargömen urged their preblitorie craft into á shadowy corner, where, with a splash and faint rattle, they threw over their mooring" chain. They proceeded to wind in the slack; the thin clink clink of the ratchet-pawl of their winch came strangely down upon the évening "brɛeza; the sound seemed to hold some vigué meaning. A shabby little steam- 10g ducked her blistered yellow funnel and foamed underneath the bridge; the tinkle of the winch ceased.
