which environment exerts upon the physical condition of children is supplied by a Blu- book, just issued, which contains a report upon the physique of the school children of Glas
gow.
The Glasgow School Board decided in 1905 to compile records of the physical measure. ments of the children, and at the same time to ascertain the conditions of their housing and their general physical surroundings. The alatistics thus obtained have been examined and analysed by Dr. W.. Leslie Mackenzie, medical member of the Scottish Local Gov- emment Board, and Capt. Foster, Inspec tor of Physical Training; and their report con-
lains much suggestive l' formation??
Seventy thren schools, primary, and higher grade, contributed returns. The children re- ported upon, who numbered 71,857, were divided into four sections: Group A-:6 "Tekouts"in" "the"poorest districts of Glasgow, 24651 children; group B➡27 schools in the poar districts, 25,348 children; group - schools in districts of better class, 11,453 chil
dren; group D-9 schools (including 4 higher- grade schools) of still higher class, 11 395 chil- dren.
看着
Among group A a number of ong-roomed houses riens as high as 19 per cent, and the number of three-roomed houses falls de low, as 8.7 per cent. In group D 'the percentage of one-roamed houses is only 1.6, and the per centage of three-roomed houses rises to 40.
NUCH BELOW THE STANDARD. __7.he_careful-analysis-of-the-statistics-shows- that at each age, from five years to t8, the average weight of the children reported on is uciformly below the standard of the Anthropo metrical Committee of the British Association. Up to the age of 14 the height of the children, bold boys and girl, in distinctly, below the standard of the Anthropometrical Committee.
In each of the four groups the average olika. boys, both for height and weight, falls marked. ly below the standard. The only exceptions | are the children, aged five, in Group D, the best group, where the little scholars are prac- tically identical in,weight with the standard,
and in height aro a shade above the standard.
The boys from Group A, those of the very poorest districts, fall. very much below the as- Beginning of October, thropometric standard. At the age of ten years,

The records of the girls are very similar. The girls from five to seven years old in Group D -(the-best-district)-are-a-little above the anthro- pometric standard, but, with this exception, the girls of all ages and all classes fall distinctly below the standard, both in height and weight. CO-RELATION OF SURROUNDING -
*AND PHYSIQUE.
The outstanding feature of the whole investi. gation is the fact that the physical condition of the children bears a distinct correspondence to the housing conditions under which they. live. Nothing could be more illustrative on this point than the table showing the average weights of children from five to 18 year old from different classes of homes:
· Boy from one-roomed house, 32,5161. Boy from two-roomed house, 56lbs. Roy from three-roomed house, Gozúlbs, Bay from four (or more) zoomed.house,
64.3lbs.
As in weight, so in height is the same contrast marked. The "one-roomed " boy is 46.6 inches 'high on the average. The lad from a two- | roomed house is 48,1 inches high. The lad from three rooms is so inches" bigb. The superior:home_on_the_oiber hand produces bays with average height of St.3 inches.
Among the girls the same variations are re- corded. The average weight of the girls, from
to 18, is

One-roomed-house, 51.5lbs.
Two-roomed house, 54.8ibs.
Three-roomed house, 59.4lbs.
Four-roomed house, 65.5lbs.
The average height of the same four types of girls is distributed in this ratio; 46.3in., 47,8in., 49.6in., 31.6in. :
