OSAKA SHOSEN KAISHA.
PROPOSED JAPAN-AMERICA SERVICE. The Osaka Shosen Kaisha has decided to open a service between Japan and America, and the necessary preparations are being pushed on. We are informed that the com. 'pasy has decided to build six seamers of 6,002 tome each. Three of these ships have been
ordered from the Misai Bishi Yard at Naga saki, sad other three from the Kawasaki Yard, Kobe, and one vessel is expected to be cum plated before the 'end of next year. The American service is to be opens in connection
with a certain railway company on the Pacific coast of the United States, and a contract has already been signed between the Osaka Shosen Kaisha and this railway company. The opening of the service requires a heavy expenditure
The cast of the six steamers is estimated at Y7,011. When the cost of the necessary shore-works is added, the total will amount to about Yoo ooo. When the new service is opened, the six steamers will be entitled to a sicam navigation encouragement bounty from the Government to the amount of Y1,200,000 anually.. This subsidy alone thus amounts to 12 per cent of the total per annum, and so it will probably be a very easy matter to raise the capital for opening the new service. The Board of Directors of the company are now considering means for raising the money whether to increase the capital, to: issue de- bentures, or to raise a temporary lean....
BRICK AND TILE INDUSTRY,

Some days ago wa had- necasion to make some comments on the manufacturing of bricks in Siam, and the great and growing demand that exis. for this material in Bangkok. On that occa ion we omitted to mention anything aboul tiles, which, of course, are in as much demand as bricks. All substantial modern buildings in Siam, more especially in the city and in many towns and villages are teafed with
bricks,
It is true that ties as well as bricks are manufactured in Bangkok, but according to appearance they are much inferior to those manufactured elsewhere; and consequently many firms engaged in building have their tiles as well as bric's brought from foreign markets. Those living in dwell mys roofed by the locally manufactured article, have in many cases to approach. Their landlords and lay petitions before them to stop the "rain down" in their rooms. Invariably much damage is done to furniture and other valuable property 'on account of this leakage through the roofs of their houres in the sainy season. From official sources it is learned that so great has been the increase of businoes furnish- ed the Canadian road, with equal reductions with that given American lines, that scarcely 10 per cent of the patronage originating within the United States; between this country and China "direct, is furnished American roads. The comparison obtains equally true with the rail traffic us with the steamship business.
Prominent among the features that giya pre- ference to travel through British Columbia ports are the regulations for entry and depar turn there, American inspectors are stationed at Victoria and Vancouver. These inspect the Chinese arriving from the Orient, and with their passing favourable inspection, furnish a certificate permitting their entry into America without other formality.
