Canton, 18th August

A serious conflagration occurred in a toas

officer, Mr. G. G. Thorne--who was attacked usual plan of insuring the sock and premises

by a number of firemen and seriously injured.

News of the affair reached Hongkong this forenoon, and from inquiries made it appears that shortly after two o'clock this morning, while all was quiet on board, a number of aromen, about six, returned to the ship in a sampan. It seems that a quarrel arose between the firemen and the tampan people, probably because the latter were un derpaid. High words were exchanged to tween both parties; the whole ship was aroused by the noise created, and, not withstanding the fact that the men were warned to keep quiet their conduct became worse.

A SPORTING PROBLEM,

Tomorrow allernoon the Hongkong Gymk. hann Club-wifl hold ils faunch meating for the season and that fact may serve as no-excuse for

mentioning a racing question which has ap: parently set Calcutta sportsmen by the ears, and has already led to innumerable bickerings among the followers of the track,. The ques: top at issue is whether the Calcutta Turf Club, have been well advised in excluding book makers from the meas000 meetings in favour of an enlarged totalisater. Naturally that is a subject which has time and agaio been argued backwards and forwards by every sporting circle in the Far East, but it never zuumed anything like the importance which appears to attach to it in Calcutta. In the first place, it is doubtful whether any bookmarker of standing could be induced to attend the

• infrequent meetings which are held in Hong- kong, and it is more than doubtful whether any bookmaker would find it to his advantage to doso. In the Straits Settlements, on the other band, the presence, of the bookmaker is a, recognised feature at the races, but there the contestants are Australian horses ridden by professional jockeys. And; again, there are meetings being held practically all the time, if not in Singapore thed in Penang or the Fes derated Malay States Even in the South, how ever, the totalisator is supported by all but

that his been written it seems to be evident that the url Club" intend 10 abide by their original decision. Were such a question to arise in Hongkong it would be interesting to speculate how the pendulum of sporting opinion would swing.
