In order, however, to popularize life and fire insurance in Manchuria, tha agents should be Chinese speaking foreigners who have a know ledge of insurance methods and are able to:láy. its nature, purposes and advantages before the * natives in an intelligent and convincing man ner, Since, as already stated, this field is as yet, practically new, American losurince.com panies, should they take immediate stepa to secure à foothold here, would be able to antic cipate their rivals. The inherent conservatism of the Chinese makes them reluctan', alter testing one thing and proving it to be good, to change it for another of a similar kind.

CRAZE FOR CAMPHOR BATING

TERRIBLE Effects.

Yet another pernicious drug habit threatens society. Camphor-eating, at present only a craze, bids fair to develop into a serious

monace.

"The increase in the number of people. addicted to the habit has reached alarming pro partions, and whereas a few years ago only isolated cases were met with here and there to-day it has become a recognised danger with which we have to cope."

So said a well-known West End consulting physician to a press representailve."

Another medical man gave it as his opinion' that the craze was introduced here by people who had lived in America.

"The only reason I can give for this," he said, is the frequency with which · medical' men in the United States prescribe camphor in one form or another in cases of nervous dis- orders.

WHERE THE DANGER LIES.

Used in quantities which we may term 'medicinal,' the poison is harmless and cura. | tive, Taken in larger dose it produlés fra

quency, force, and fullaess of the pulsa,

"That is when danger begins, for additional dases will produce great mental activity and exhilaration, which is the state desired by, the unhappy victim of the habit.

"A further result is extreme lassitude. During the time of taking and subsequent stages the patient's skin perspires freely, but be seems cool, though probably pale.

"In America camphor is very frequently combined with opium, which is the most dangerous form of all in which it can be ab Forbed,

"The last stages of the habit are terrible, nausea, general paralysis, and delirium follow. ing quickly upon one another."

A SOUTH AMERICAN HABIT. A well-known explorer, who has travelled practically all over the world, said :—

"I do not think 1 am making any mistake when I lay the introduction of this vice into Eng and at the doors of South America.

"There camphor-eating is no nousu, thing, and even the Roman Catholic priests, who, carry camphor ostensibly as a fever preventive, can be seen nibbling at a block as they walk about the country and in the streets.

"Camphor is a poison, but, taken carefully, it has ao invigorating influence on the circu lation, bave seen it taken in milk, in chloro form, and even in water, in its liquid form; in pills I have known it mixed with opium, but, most frequently I have seen it just mibbled all day, off and on, from a small block, such as you would buy in a chemist's here for 4d, ox 6d."

· BALE HAS INCREASED: ""

A Bond-treet chemist said that the ale of camphor, both in block and liquid had certainly. Rose up surprisingly in the last year, and that:

large percentage of the purchasers werh Americans and Brazilians.

"Of course, we do not know what are the camphor is being povЛto," he said, "but we koow one case in which the poison" was used! As a drug. even iddian hemp; and we ourselves aro It is more injurious in lis after effects than always particular to add a word of warding when providing it in the liquid form, which is the more potent." din m

It is quite time we heard of phor Commission bain set at work in England, Rut a good many of the persons indulging in that practice may be Parlisímantary" voters. it would never do to meddia tuo bastily with such people.
