THE WRECK.

BY WILFRID L. RANDELL,

The night shut down with a steady south- west wind that sent the ecod spisning over the long grey, son-wall, across the shinning rails. 'clean into the midst of the huddled houses ba

hind. At first, mere specks of flying foam, that stippled the lamp-lil windows with small, sliding clumps of bubbles; then big, shapeless Routs of spray that snicked nyaina! the glass': with a sharp tinkle, end caught those who were out of doors unexpected slaps, cold, salt, and stinging, on hands and face. Afterwards, an the tide rose, driven up by the increasing gale, and the long waves began to lift above the curving embankment, exchi white crest topping the granite was whipped off bodily and swung hissing along until it flavened with a rousing bang on the window of some startled coltager,

|

or smacked itself into a hundred runuals on roof and wall. In the gloom" the stores and warehouses seemed to be crowding together, sheltering, collars up, from the belabouring storm.

Somewhere out in the mark a big, tramp steamer was baying hoarsely as she slithered before the racing seas for the harbour mouth, and as soon as the thi k sweeps of rain ob scured her lights the prolonged, mournful dog- bowl of the coastguard siren began giving tongue. Every half-minute the graff note started, throbbing in a few moments of swift' crescendo to its high, ghostly wail, a challenge o the storm High on the cliff from his little *atch house, à man fo lowed through night klasses the creeping lights of the steamer between drifts of blinding rain and spray. Once he turned to the telephone which can. nected his shelter with the harbour, and, ring ing up, spoke a 'faw quick sentences, résuming" his vigil immediately. '',

Still the tide was rising. "ha almanack foretold it as high at two o'clock; midnight had' not struck, yet wave after wave as it broke lunged at the concave wall and mounted spectrally into the darkness only to be dashed fiercely down across the metals by the instant wind. A little" group, gathered at the edge of the railway, as close to the turmoil as they dered, straining for a glimpse of those glimmering lights that ventured so dangerously otar.. In a minute or two there were a couple of rmart ex- plosions from the pierhead, a hundred yards away, and two lines of yellow fire, sprang up to the clouds and burst. Almost at the same moment a blue flare spal its għastly illumina tion into the rain." The onlookers, expecting to sea those gleams back away from the fand- for the boat was much out of her course—w them instead apparently coming round, a more which in n-calpi would have brought her riskily close inshore, but which was perilops indeed with a high gale behind. forcing her landward with every blast. Either misjodging hit dit. “ iance, or under-rating the strength of the wind, the captain altempted to tur, pass the har bour entrance, and the sea wall, and awarve to the open for a fresh start; for, having gone so far, it was impossible to steer his bost on the stant between the two stone jettier with a beavy sea running. It required careful handling to enter even in daylight with a big véssel.

She crept round until broadside-on to the long wall, heading straight for the rocky head- tand that roared with wind and surf; then she topped, those on board seeming to realize

that she would never answer the wheel in time so clear the point. The watchers est up a shout; a minute's delay, broadside to that baltering ses, was madness; but the warning was caught from their lips and flung back into. the night. Behind the clouds a wáning moon was ascending, and silhouetted black against the vague, sullen pallor of the sky they could now distinguish the outline of the ship. Her engines, though evidently reversed at full speed, were practically powerless; she plunged till the propeller spun in air; she was thrust in towards the shora with every wave. And now, the seas were striking the wall thunderously, full and square, each concussion sending A tremer through the whole embankment, fol- lowed by a rattle of stones as tons of water fell fnaming across the trick into the roadway behind.

Half a dozen men rushed up with the rocket apparatus, but before they could use it the great shape of the steamer loomed above their heads, and they, with the agonised watcher", ran backward. Men threw ropes, but they either snapped or fell short.

They, could only watch, and wait, Doc or two bral Their hands together and knew nothing of the tears that ran from their eyes,

The crash came. The huge, unwieldy mass cannoned against the edre of the ten-wall with a pitecus, grinding noise, and both her masta cracked' off and fell. She reeled back on ta the next immense wave, which raised and dropped her, scraping, down the cruel, edge. again, As she swung, her masts dragged to and fro with hopeless wreckage across the track. Her engines were stopped; steam rose from her excape-pipes; those on shore could see, men coming up from below, and their, faces in the sickly green-

•port jumped from the deck,

For two hours she was lifted and buried
