THE LATEST CHANNEL SWIM.
GALLANT ATTEMPT.
Dover, July 12.
1 have ju treturned on the Sea Wall, after witnessing Jabez Wolff's second unsuccessful
attempt to swim the Channel. He started most hopefully, and continued ? tej, hi hours in the water, doig vigorous work, in the end his injured leg again compelled him to give in. Everything promised welt when we left the Granville Dock at half-past seven this morning." There was a slight Frizzle at the outset, and by the time we bad reached the South Foreland Just befure ten, a fierce shower was falling.'
On the Sea Wolf, which accompanied the swimmer, were §.F.. A. Alexander, the donor of || the Channel Swimming Cup | Mr. W. Keiling, ey, of the Brighton 8.C.; MG. A. W. Creasy, of the Angleur Swimming Club; Mr. F. W Mases, of the R vensbourne S.C. Dr. Rich hedion (who is looking after Wolff's physical writ-being, Wiler rickets (the trainer) and Pijat Douglas McDonald. Cap, Birchfield is skipper of an amateur cew, of which Squire Whilehurst's chief engineer. All were giving their services.
THE START:
In a petting rainstorm, Wolff was rowed to a Title jut el sand under the steep, white cliff of the South Foreland, and here he was smother ed with a ghastly looking preparation, which nade him look like a living plastic statue Motor goggles and a little waterproof skull-cap. completed his sumphibian titre, and a half. Paste to the moment he walked gingerly in- to the water, shivering like a child. It was "more nervousness than anything-just a touch of thi needle," as athletes call it, Half disan of us on a small bout saw him, and signalled the same to the gallant little sea Wall, whereupon she, hooted strenuously
thrau, h her syzer, and from her deck the pipers skirted until their cheeks cracked skiing a new skiri, "entirely, written, com posed, and imaginel by the glorious Me Pherson in the si'ent watches of last night. That skizi is called "Crossing the Channel. Jack Wolff's dog plumped down on his stera, cocked his pose heavenwards, and added to the music with a "wow, wow, wow," which male the blue water of the English Channel curl up in agony.
THE BATTLE BEGINS."
In a minute or two Wolff kicked his boats off at the edge of a shelving, rock, then he laid "his laud" upon the ocean's mane and pled familiarly with his hoary locks," and the battle had begun. Wolff is a wonderful swimmer. He took the water like, a great white porpoise, with a free and easy, and fam lid roll-gently at first, with the left overarm stroke, and a strong, clean kick with the right
for de started as 27 in slack, and water, and Mr. Kellingles jumped in alongside to maka company for him. At the same moment the guns from the fort biomed out as if in salute, and a great cloud of gulls rose tereaming into heaven-a pretty mixture of noises, with Jack, the dex, as leader of the chorus, howling, hiệ immortal soul into the misty morning.
Our amateur crew worked the Sea Wolf splendidly. Mrs. Wolff and her mamma co ked us a jolly breakfast, and brewed strengthening concoctions of Oxo for their here speeding through the blue water.
There was no excitement or Burry," and everything in the green garden of the Channel was lovely, Before noon the sun came out and cleared every speck of cloud away.
WELL AHEAD OF TIME.
i
At 126 Wolff passed the South Goodwip lightship well ahead of `time` and tids. ·This position cost lielbsim (starting between Dover and Folketane) six and a half hou s of effort.
So far Wolff had everything in band,, and was going 40 strongly that Crickett ordered

At ten minutes th seven we were at the east end of the ridge, and right miles from Capt Grises. Wolff was going splendidly, when suddenly he groaned, and turned over in the water. "My leg has gorn again," he gurgled, and I can't keep on any longer; awfully sorry." The pipes stopped in the middle of a skirtį we put out in the little boat, and hauled he swim- mer on board.
