A HIGH CLASS PRIVATE HOTEL,

set aside in this year's account. Many of the debts in question dated back for some long time and had beendelt outstanding, in the hope of recovery; but it had been de cided to write these off. It was hoped that by a more careful rendering of accounts and by a stricter supervision than formerly, repetition of bad debts of this nature would he avoided in future. He was glad to say that no bad. debts had been incurred during the past six months under the new régime, and the substitution of the cath for the chut system would also be of assistance in this direction. The buildings had for some years past been written down so heavily that when the time came to demolish them the amount at which they stood in the books would be insignificant, while the new blocks at the back had in reality appreciated in value, by reason of the present, enlinnced cost of building Dur. ing the next year. certain increased expe ditore must be looked for, as it was hardly to be expected that the new Land Assess ment Committee would recommend a continu- ance of the present low vide on which the | Company's land was inted, and a decided in

crease in Fire Insurance rates bad already come into force. Continuing, the Chairman said that it would be within the recollection of | shareholders that in the report for the year ended June 30, 1996 details of amounts writ ten off to various accounts were given. Sum. marised in round thousands, il ese "were: to depreciation, maintenance, good will, $190,000 which had been augmented this year by $37,000 in respect of the first two items; in addition to this, $11,000 had been written off to there A.

accounts in respect of the premium on 'the new issue of shares in 190, while reserve stood at $30,00; making a total written off during the six years of the Com pany's existence of $367,005, or an average of over $61,000 per annum-equal to nearly ten per cent of issued capital. It was a showing which he thought might be considered satisfac tory. It was also an indication of the policy of successive Boards of management which the Directors believed inspected the wishes of the majority of the shareholders, who would prefer an absolutely sound financial position to large dividends at the expense of stability. With these remarks he would propose the adoption of the Report and accounts as printed.

There were no questions, and the following resolutions were then put to the meeting and carried unanimously.

በነ

roposed by the Chairman and seconded by Me, Jameton That the Report and Accounts- as published be adopted and passed,

Proposed by the Chairman and seconded, by Mr. Ayscough That a dividend of 9 per cent on be issued Capital be declared for the year ended June 30, 1907.

Proposed by Mr. R. W. MacCabe, and seconded by Mr. M. `Speelman i That the appointment of Mr. J. N. Jamuion as a D ̧jector of the Company be confirmed.

Proposed by Mr. M. Speelman and seconded by Mr. R W. MacCabe: That Mr. F. Ayscough be re-elected a Director of the Company.

Proposed by the Chairman nod seconded by Mr. F. Ayscough That faturé annual meet- inge of the Company taka place in August of each year.

In putting this last- Resolution, the Chair- mas explained that by Clause 59 of the Articles, of Association the annual general meeting must be held la July unless otherwise decided by the Shareholders in general meeting, and July being too early to be convenisai, August was therefore suggestad.
