AMERICAN "DREADNOUGHTS."

According to a Washington despatch of June 20, the Newport New Shipbuilding Company, with one bid at $3,117,000, and the Fore River Shipbuilding Company, of Massachusetts with a bid at $4,377,000, were the successful bidders to-day for building the two 20,000-lon battle ships of the Dreadnewekt type for the United States navy.

The design selected shows that the ships will carry a heavy armour and as powerful Armament as any known vessel of this class; will have a speed: believed to be the highest practicable for a vessel of this type and class and have the highest practicable readiness of action, with a total coal booker capacity of 2,300 tons a speed on trial of twenty-one knots, a length on the load water line of about giỏ feet and an extreme breadth of about eighty- five feet two and five-eighths inclics. The

Main battery, ten twelve-inch breech-loading armament is to be composed as follows.

rifles.

Secand battery, fourteen five-inch rapid-fire guns; four three-pound saluting guns; four

one-pounder semi-automatic guns; two three inch field pieces; two machine guns, calibre 30; two submerged torpedo tubes.

The hulls of the vessels are to be protected by a water line belt of armoureight feet in width, whote maximum thickness will beeleven inches and, whose cross-section will be uniform throughout the length of the belt. This belt armour gives effective protection to the boilres, machinery and magarine apaces.

Since the change of the title of the Can-is tan Provincial Mint to Branch Canton Mint under the control of the Tuchihpu at Peking, everything has been carried in accordance with instructions from that Ministry.

The

properal of the Shan Hou Chu, however, for the minting of silver dollar pieces, which has been going on for some time, will be continued as before, for the time being, pending further instructions, but the minting of copper cents will now be carried out according to the new instructions from Peking.

built,

The arrangement of the main battery guns to be such as to permit a broadside fire 25 per cent. greater than that of any battleship The average elevation of the axis of these guns is expected to be greater than that of any knowo battleship, thus affording a distinct advantage in long range firing under all condi-

tions of weather.

The actual total weight of hull and armour in the proposed designs for the ships is approxi- mately 3,000 tons greater than the largest battleship so far built. The design contem plates an arrangement for the "installation" of reciprocating of turbine machinery.

THE POLICE FORCE. The Acting Provincial Judge. Kung, 'is strongly bent on bringing up the Centon Pulice force toahigh state of efficiency, and has effected many reforms in this connection. To show his strict attention to that matter, yester day, while on his way back to his yamen: from the office of the Yuet-Ban Railway Company, he passed two constables supposed to be on duty in different streets, who were not attend- ing to their duty, so he at once took down their Wines numbers, and will probably deal with them
