MANY in Hongkong will regret to hear the news of the death of Mr. Ernest J. Meugess, of the Harbour Department, which took place last Wednesday night at the Government Civil Hospital, from liver troubles. He was born forty seven years ago and, was for a time employed in the "Glen Line Company. Afterwards he was engaged by Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Company and held the position as chief officer on ons of their coasting boats, in 1889 he joined the Harbour Office, a position he held astil his death, Mr. Meugens was one of the best known men in the Colony; he was popular, both with the sailormen and the peo ple living ashore. He will be missed by many in Hongkong. He leaves a widow and four children to mourn his loss. The funeral passed the monument on Thursday afternoon at five o'clock.

SANITARY Inspector D. J. O. Holloran pro. secuted a boarding-house keeper at the Police Court, last Tuesday, for offering him a bribe of Sto, on Monday, Mr. Jackson, of Messrs. Johnson, Stokes and Master, appeared for the defence. The accused denied the allegation. No evidence was taken at this hearing, the care being simply called up and adjourned.
