- THE TRADE OF CANTON..

(22nd July). An extremely interesting report on the trade of Canton last year, appears in the latest publication issued by the Imperial Mariume Customs, under the signature of Mr. F..J. Mayers, the Acting Commissioner of Customs. The writer remarks that it is somewhat surprising, and therefore all the more gratifying. To find that in spite of unfavourable conditions-high exchange, spring floods, and disastrous autumn ty phoons-there has again been a slight in crease in the revenue, the advance over the figures for 1905 being Hk. 1. 157.79 The total nut value of the trade of the port shows an increase of nearly two millioh tacks, which, in view of the high sterling exchange ruling throughout the year, and the con sequent reduction in the silver value of foreign-imports, indicates a satisfactory development of the general trade of the port l'ut Canton might do much better still, and no doubt will do so as soon as the unfortunate dissensions which are now hindering the construction of the trunk railway line to

SUBSIDIARY COINAGH.

(23rd July.)

The official correspondence which was laid before the Legislative Council this afternoon practically brings to a finality, so far as the Government is concerned, the dis- cussion upon the question of the subsidiary coins of Hongkong. It would appear from the last two lelegrains that the notification appearing in the issue of the Gazelle Satur day week last, and which was conimented upon in the Hongkong Telegraph of that day is the outcore of a series of com-

munications which has been carried on

Several cases of piracy have, unfortunately, to be recorded the most important of them concerned the West River steamer, Sainam whose captain was severely wounded and a passenger Dr. Macdonald, of Wuchow-kill- ed, on the 13th July. The question of devising more effective measures for the suppression of river brigandage has been for some time past carefully discussed by the Chinese and foreign authorities; but so far, no definite arrangements has been arrived at The problem is by no long a satisfactory solution may be found." means an easy one, but it is hoped that before

The members of these gangs appear to be jacks of all trades; they can turn their hands to any business and make a pre- lence to belong to any calling. Assessor has had to present to the public has shown a con- tinuity in the progressive development not only of the city of Victoria but also of the` outlying, villages and of the important townships of Kowloon and Yau-ma-ti But the report now under notice furnishes a break in the pleasing continuity which we have been accustomed to. Taking the Colony as a whole, as compared with the preceding valuation, that for the current: year amounts to $to,654,338 against 510830,273, being a total decrease of $315,390, the whole amount being set against the city of Victoris, whereas the Hill.
