small V-shaped channel to carry the dry-wan ther flow and prevent loss by evaporation if. spread over a large service. It is estimated that the calchwater will carry from in, to "in. "of rain "per hour from the drainage nrca. Ovarlows are provided, in suitable places for use if necessary. At the lower end of the catchwater, the dry-weather flow channel connects with a small channel' passing round the side of the reservoir, and connecting by means of a pipe to the gauge basin on the main supply pipe from the re esevoir. This is called the clear water channel, lotended to intercept water fies the streams conver it direct to the filterbeds, as after heavy rains the water'in the reservoir is for some days *o turbid as to be unfilterable. The service re- servoir is situated just beyond the old boundary fine of British territory, and has a capacity of 2,000,000 gallons. The total cost of the whole work comes to about one million and a quarter of dollars, and it is expected the supply in a year of tolerably sevare drought will amount to | one million and a half gallons per day.
SKIPPING.
It is time that this letter draw to a close, but shipping - certainly needs one remark. Hong- kook claims to have exceeded the fures of London and to be the greatest shipping port in the world. Londan refused to admit the claim. Whether Hongkong does or does not lead, it is corials that its figures are of a commanding nature. The attendant satellite of the liner, or coamer, the steam launch is everywhere extra. qrdinarily in evidence,, Hongkong harbour han no less than 300 launches constantly" flit | ́ting about on its waters, and is in this way one of the busiest in the world. Viewing their numbers accidents may be said to be remark. ably few, Hongkong may be truly said to possess unrivalled steamer communication
with almost, every put of the, world. There are the mail lines for Europe, America, „India, and Australii,. The main lin a of big shipping, are certainly cause of remark, but equally so is the immensa Aset, of coatie n. The Ching Navigation Compsity with its sixty vessels, the Indo-Chinx with a large fleet, the Chios Merchants, several Japanese consling loss, the Douglas Company, the Chick and Manila Company, and others keep up constant communication with all the parts of China, Japan, Formosa, the Philippines, Sinin, Indo- China, and Horneo In the harbour, a British harbour it may be noted, the British flag is ill largely in evidence; it is not swamped by the
foreign ensigns that are welcomed and giv o equal rights with, it. In Singapore at times one bus to look stound for the red ensign; in Hongkong it seemsalways in evidence. Even the Japanees flag, numerous as its en ries are, does not seem so greatly in evidence afont as Japanese subjects undoubtedly are on land
The two greal factors of Itongkang's success remain as they always, have been' They are the flag that betokens the soverei nly and the freedom of comm*ige it implies, plus its geo. graphical position at the door of a great con. tinent where a vast trade may be done, and grow vister with jes građu il opening. I cannot refrain in conclusion Tom repealing g what ! wrote on the fast occ.sion of my visit. The possession of Hongkong is a great privilege, but it is likewise a great responsibility. This outpost on the borders of a great Empire, which has not yet achieved its proper position in the world's trade, is a precinus inheritance hande å to each generation fur its owå benefit and' profit, a d-to.conserve and develop for those who follow.
