If there had been a light the owner, he contwain, or engineer the owner sllow the Coxwain to dash his must have seen it; Sir Henry Bulaley, KC, instructed by Mrch on to the wreck just after he had G. The case for the plaintiffs beleg closed, Mr, was absolutely no evidence that the Hot Po Blade opened and faid that the bulk was punk was going at anything but a proper speed. on the 18th September and from that time is Captain fall bad stated that there was only the 9th October the wreck remained sulighted, ghi injury to the stem of the Hot Pa which On the 9th October, an official from the Harwould not have been the fact if she was going bour Office went to hir. The argument was confouing when the learning that he was looking, after the opera tions for the salvage of the machinery of the Stanfield, he requested Mr. Gotham to light the wreck at night. No work was done by Mr,. Gotham's men at night and there. fore it was not obligatory on him to light the wreck at night as he was not the "owAIT. However he said he would do so, and instruct. The ed his assistant: Mr. Wright to sod 10ʻit: latter, thereupon, ordered a first quality, copper, red-globe lanp of strong manufacture, and had that placed in position on the wreck Then he engaged a boatman and his wife to go out every evening and trim and light that lamp. it was unfortunate that these two wit nesses were brought into Court at the fast hearing, and for some reason since then they bad not been step or heard of, and their whereabouts could not be traced. But inde pendent evidence would be given to show that A red light was burning brightly on the nigbi in qucation, at least up to 10 p.m. On the oth October Wright and Sergeant Gordon who were personal frisade, dined together in friendly way, and after dinner went to the Yau mati Wharf, and Gordon asked Wright whats the sunken Stanfield was, The wrock was pointed out to him, and both saw the red light on her then butaing brightly. At that time it was merely as unimportant incident, but the collision the incident assumed important pexi morning when news was gathered of the proportions, and 10 the event was impressed upon the minds of Wright and Gordon. Cap tain Parsons, of the sa. Alderon, which steamer had since taken the place of the hulk Stanfield, also saw the light burning on the hulk every sight. On the night in question there was a strong north wind blowing, and the captain considered the advisability of letting out mor cabic. He went along the deck to take observa tions and found the Alderon was quite safe, and so he let out no more cable, but it was while taking those observations that he noticed the red light burning on the Stanfield.

"HONGKONG LADY ROBBED OF JEWELRY.

Without information that will aid the Seattle police in an effort to solve the mystery of the jewelry robbery aboard the steamer Minnesota while that wessel was moored at Kabe, on her verage from the Oriert to Fugel, sout, Mrs. William Bradley Walker, loser by the theft, reached Seattle yesterday, reports the local In telligencer of 8th ult. All explanations for.. nished the officers at work on the case add to the difficulties that had marked the affair, as 10 Sir Henry witness said he noticed the reported, in cablegrams from 3ipan, Mis, light particularly because he had instructions Walker, in a statement signed and furnished to see if it was burning, from Mr. Gorham. the department of police, in Kobe, ku fixed hen he went to see if it was necessary to the value of the jewis taken at approximately let out more cable it was about 8.30 p.m. He $1,850 American money. by Mrs. Walker. The thief's success in evad- ing capture by officials of the steamer, who were promptly put at work on the case, how ever, makes e-puzzling problem.l

According to Mrs Walker's story, she had placed her small handbag carrying jewels and money, on a hook near a window in ber state- mom. The window opened on the promenade deck. Possingers were seen to pass the spot at the time, by under sich conditions that it appears highly improbable that one of these could have taken the valuables. · Mra Walker is ace mpanied on her voyage to America by a Burmese auric maid. This servant was absent on shore upon the afternoon of the robbery, and it is stated that for no time as long as a minute did Mrs. Walker leave a position where she could have seed the handbag.

Re-examined: I had no intape of g-ing to the wreck to re-light the lamp.

Mr. Slade : You had no boat on the Aldetta! Witness: 1 bad about half a boat with most of its bottom knocked out (Laughter),

Mr. Slade: Then akhough you were in structed to see that the red light was kept burning, when you saw it was out you had so means of going to the wreck?

Witness: None whatever, and there were no sampans to be hind.

Br. William Weight, an employee of the Fo migating and Disinfecting Bureau, Ld., spoke in to receiving instructions from Mr. Carb mio get a red light fixed upon the wreck. He did so and produced the lamp, and receipted bill for same dated 9th October, and signed by Bailey and Company, tě also spoko se 10 seeing the light burning on the night of the collision, the fact being impressed on his mind by Sergeant Gordon asking him where the Stanfield was, and on pointing her out he saw the red light burning. In the daytime the wreck was marked by a red flag three feet square. The lamp was a first quality ship's lamp built to resist strong wind, and it would not be likely 10 be blown out. A sudden severe impact might cause it to go out, as had frequently happened in collisions.

C. D. News on 16th ult. The mere fact that he rouses great opposition in many quarters need not be taken as conclusive evidence that he is not a suitable Viceroy for the Liang Kwang. At the same time it cannot be denied that he seems to have the defects of bis, qualities. He is energetic, but his ener gies are not always well directed, and be appears-if universal report does not traduce him to lack what may be called a calm out look on life. He is too fond of Berserk methods, he has heard of our old friend "fortiter in ie," but never of "suaviter in mado." Hence ho creates unnecessary friction, and he does not stand for what might be called the "new idea" in China, namely, to govern mora by content and less by sheer force, But it must not be forgetten that in these days of transition. abi ve all things a strong hand is needed in the provinces, as it is a curious fact that the Chinese, almost more than any other race; have a capacity for passing by nearly instan taneous gradation from a law-abiding frame of mind to instant anarchy. The problem of ruling modern China in hard to solve, and ODD reads with a grim sense of humour the

of easy criticisms persons who can scarce. ly manage their own Chinese servants. If these good people felt the rain for a few months of holding a great province together, they would see things from a different angle

Furiber evidence was then heard and Mr. and be leas ready to condemn the average Slado addressed the Coun on behalf of the Chinese Governor. He has indeed to grapple defendants, and argued that the plaintiffs bad with stern reality, and may do so in a way ihat
