DANGERS
Of lato years the housefly, has been receiving 4 considerable amount of attention at the bands of sanitariaos, an l this for a reason of mach importance viewed from'tha public-health sandpoint. In previous decades the fly was regarded simply as a nuisance and a vexxilon, 1 It made itself obtrusive, burred about your urs and disturbed the general peace. of the bou shold, but it was certainly not regarded ither as an enemy to our welfare, or as a fendly foe to health. Things are' changed sowadays. A recently published report-issued" by the corporation of Gowan, and emanzling from the bacteriologist, sorves to show forth the insanitary misdeeds of the household peit. The Gowan report is modelled on lines which had already been represented in prior publica” (loss of the same nature. These reports havait been made both in Eu ope and in America, and they serve to show the fly in a new lights And in a vary unfavourable one-namely, a carrier of disease and distributor of germs.
The mode of procedure employed to prove that the fly is a danger to health can be readily understood. In one experiment the flies are caught and confined under, såy,' glass cases, which protect substances on which germs are grown in the laboratory. It is need- less to say these substances, are alerilized- that is, are free from all germ-contamination. The flies placed in free communication with euch substances' walk over them and taste them after the mander of their kind. They are invited, in fact, by the bacteriologist to walk into. bis litte-chamber, and they readily avail themselves of bis invitation. Now, the object,
bis arrangement of los and jelly is a simple one. The growing' substance is the oil, and the flies are the intended sowers of the reeds otherwise gem-which will grow in the soil. If the fly casted no microbes on its legs or person, the jelly would remain sterile as when it was placed under the jar. 11, on the contrary, the fly is a germ-carrier, its contact with the jelly would inoculate that aubstance, and the development of germs thas sown would be a matter of simple attention in the laboratory e
Let us note the results of the experiment. After twenty-four hours' heating and incubation in the laboratory, numerous colonies of germs appeared on the surface of the jelly. Clearly next point was the determination of the species the flies had sown the seeds they carried. The
of microbe which bad thus blossomed forth The twin-screw-s.s. Shawmut and Tremont into full fruition after the sowing. At Gowan, are fitted with very superior accommodation the germs thus developed were found to belong for first and second class passengers. The

Previous experimens were conducted on sightly different lines, The Cowan researches took the fly as it is found in all its unblushing effrontery and as it exists in our houses. But in the other experiments, flies were first brought in contact with tuberculosis matter, derived from cases of consumption. They were, then made to pass over the growing jelly of the lazoratorý, sterilized as before The idea was that of discovering whether the flies could carry from the tubicular matter the bacilli of the disease, and thus infect the jelly. If this was proved, then the similir infection of food wat proved to be a clear possibility. Perfect suc cess attended the experiment.
The tubercular
bacilli were conveyed by the flies to the growing substance, andcolonies of the microbes sprang up thereon. These investigations place beyond the shadow of a doubt the facts that flies can and do carry microbes, that infection of food is not merely possible, but must lake place in the natural sequence of things, and that the insects are to be regarded as powerful disseminators of disease, if only by reason. of
their numbers and their ubiquitous Me,”
The practical outcome of these investigations Lie to open our eyes to a source of infection which has hitherto received but little attention, or, at least, very i-adequate attention, having regard to the grave issues involved. Take, for example, the case of a very serious trouble that knows infant cholera" or "infantile summer diarrhoea Hot is a dicase which
