stricken, and the officer could not control. O. WHERE BAGS WERE MADE UP. them. The boats which did, roach the water ware instantly packed with Chinamen, while almost all of the passengers were rescued by the Japanese in their sump'ns,

Harrying down the steps of the gangway,

I jumped into the nearest boat, the last passen- ger to leave the ship. The boat happened to be a lifeboat; it contained the first officer, the ship's doctor, one or two of the crew, and a dosen Chinemen, but not a single passenger, In fact, as far as I have bean able to learn,“not more than half a-dozen of the passenger in all were saved in the ship's boats, which were filled by the crew and Chinamen before any one else had time to escape. With great difficulty we backed off among the crowding sampans and waited to see whether the ship would sink-completely.

The rocks, as the captain told me later, had evidently torn a great rent along the side of the vessel. Almost the first part to fill was the boiler room, and the flooding of this first for tuna'ely prevented the danger of a boiler ex plosion. The dyname room was also flooded, and the ship's interior plunged into darkness, The sopansion of the to'ephone system made It extremely difficult for the captain to learn the extent of the injury, or to communicate his orders to the officers and crew. When the vessel stopped," she rested on the rocks just back of the middle, and as the rent was for- ward, the bow filled first. As she wank, the stern was lifted high out of the water, and the whole forepart, as far as the bridge, was sub- merged; and in this position, with a slight list to starboard, she remained transfixed.

The darkness was gathering, and it was quite time to be making for the shore. The Capicin had come aboard on our life-boat a few minutes after I left the ship and we had put back to the side a second time while one of the officers went after the log. By this time most of the boats had started for the shore, and getting a sampan to lead the way, we followed. As it grew too dark to see the beach, the japanese kindled a huge bonfire on the racks, and guided by this bescon, we landed in safety soon after.. ་ ་

I think I am expressing the sentiment of all the passengers, as well as my own, in saying that no one could have treated us more kindly and hospitably than the Japar eso of Shirahama, Every means within their reach was utilised to make us comfortable, and we were all grateful for their attention. Early the next morning we were up and ready to do everything possi- ble to save our baggage from the wreck. During the morning many sampans visited the steamer to bring off trunks to the pas- sengers, and much bedding and other fuṛalth- ings belonging to the ship were also brought ashore Almost all of the cabin -baggaga was lauded, but all of the tranks in the baggage-room were lost as this part of the ship was under water. Some of the trunks had been broken open and robbed, but to what extent this was carried on, and whether by the Japanese or by the crew 'I do not know. Law during the afternoor a rag doll lying on a pile of rubbish in one of the Japanese villages, where it' bad been thrown by some children who had been playing with it. It belonged to one of the passengers, who said that she had packed it almost in the bolt m of one of ber trunke, My own trunk was brought s.fely to shore, nothing hiving been taken from it, nor even disturbed, though when I left it in my stateroom the lid was not even shut, ♬ n one part of the beach I saw hundréda' of letters which had been torn open, and whose contents

·kad been scattered in all directions, I did not atop to examine them, but one of the crew told me that they were from a bag of registered mail and that he had seen certain individuals collecting the cheques and various valuables which they contained,

|

Early in the afternoon the s s. Hakuai-maru,; from Yokohama, which had been dispatched to our relief, came in sight off the cape. The wind, however, was so high that it was out of the question to iry to take the passengers out" on the boats, so wo were compelled to spend another night in the village of Shirahama. This time we were more comfortable, for much- of the ship's bedding had been brought on shore for our use.* notice was posted at the hotel where I way staying that if the weather permitted, the passengers would begin to em bark for the relief ship at six the following morning. On Tuesday, however, the sea was aven rougher than on the preceding day, so the steamer was signalled to proceed to Tateyama, op the other side of the Awa Peninsula, inside of the bay, where the water was more sheltered, while arrangements were made to convey the passengersthither by land. There were scarcely enough jinrikisha available to carry the ladies of the party, so that most the gentiumen 'wiTe compelled to walk almost all of the eight miles to Tateyama. We renhed the part about noon tired, and hungry, and, were" conducted to a hotel, where refreshments were provided,
