On Friday morning, the prisoner, still in' the bravery of bridal attire, was taken over 10. Shanghai and lodged in the City Magistrate's yamen. Four accomplices and go betweens," the man who had negotiated the "marriage with the unfortunate tailor, were arrasted and taken over to Shanghai at the same time. The trist, which took place on Friday, excited the greatest interest, and the Court was filled to overflowing while the hearing was proceeding. In reply to the Magistrate the prisoner gave the following account of him. self. He was 23 years of age; in early ide he was apprentis ed to a tailor, but afterwards took up the business of a story-teller and ballad: singer. When he was 18 years old a barber named Shui-tong told him that he would look remarkably well in woman's clothes, and fa73 suggested that might be a good thing 'from a financial point of view if he would adopt the idea Prisoner thought over, the suggestion and at last decided to upon it, so he dressed himself as a girl, let his hair grow long in front, and in a few. maths was so completely changed that every boy thought he was a woman... In fact so successfully was he disguised that he became the victim of quite a scandal, for from seeing him so frequently with the barber, some of the village gossips ket him down as the latter's In course of time the barber met with re verses in business, and wanting money very badly, he asked the prisoner if he would con- sent to get married. Prisoner agreed and with the help of the "go-betweens," each of whom received 14, was engaged to the tailor, The rest of the story has already been related, but we are sorry not to be able to record that the ingenious barber, if such a person ever really existed, has also been laid by the heels. He got clean away, however, the day before the marriage, and, according to the prisoner, look most of the tailor's jewellery and money withim.
