"MODERN" KGOISM.

SPEECH DY FATHER DERNARD, VAUGHAN..

The Oxford Union, last month, debated the question whether or not the egoism of modern life is a real menace to the British Empire.

Father Barnard Vaughan was the principal speaker lo favour of the motion. When diagnos ad, bu said, fi was seen to be closely related to the egoism that had brought about the downfall and ruin of Empires such as Phonicsa, Athens, and Rome, It was seriously waskoning the best activities of our social organism. Anyase who had recently returned to. England after in long absence could not help being almost tar-1 rified by the feverish unrest in political and commercial circles, and even in domestic and

social life. Men wanted not to do or to give but to get what was un-get-gt-able.

There was one explanation of this tornado of Borest. When man los sight of God and of His laws he lost all sense of proportion. Our worship today was Mammon; the world measured happiness and respectability by wealth... People asked for a short cut to riches, and hence the bubble companies, money. lenders, bribery, wild advertisements and rackless betting.

Chatelard, Rev. Dousin and Mr. Rajinatovich. taught that prosently there would 'be a social upheaval, when the prizes of life would be shued and dealt out afresh with a chance of) A prize for every hewer of wood and drawer of water.

"

He was afraid there were tokens bi weakness in parts of the social fabric as threatening as those in St. Paul's day, arising from agant of "organized patriotism," as the Amelican. President would say. Dealing with over. crowding, he said the explanation was that the demand for houses was greater than the supply, 'and' no ill-conditioned landlords, would ask fancy prices for their death traps. Thus egoism was bleeding to death those who should be our

Empire-builders and defenders. The toiling classes were patient people, he went on, but their patience was becoming exhausted. Universal education and universal suffrage were teaching them to organise labour and to send from their own ranks their representatives into the House of Commons.

Who could have believed a quarter of a century ago that to-day would see a trong and businesslike Labbur Party in the House? Their members had come to stay, and in the next Parliament they, would see their ranke

numbering a hundred. The workman's motor car would be driven by a Socialistic, spirit un less social reform was quickly and well or- gaalsed. But above social reform was or- ganised patriotism," which necessarily included the substitution of a national feeling for mere local pride, with as a result a high ambition for the whole country.

"In conclusion, Father Vaughan uttered a wish for more men like President Roosevelt, with his latty spirit and true patriotism.',
