TIBET FOR TIBETANS:

EXPLORER SINT PACKING IN QUICK TIME.

Dr. Erich Zugmayer, the Austrian explorer, who has returned to Vienna after bis hazardous journey in Tibet, has given Reuter some addi- tional details of his expedition.

A particularly trying time was that ex- perienced in the endeavour to reach the upper portion of the river Kesia Dary. Having crossed this waterway, we entered unsurveyed country, and from this point it was my Inten tion to find some pass by which I might reach Lake Markham, on the niber side of the rang

"Os'arriving at the end of a long valley we found, a' pass, but it was filled, with irs and snow, forming caves and crevasses, which it was impossible to cross Here we had the worst experience of the expedition...

When we saw what was the positing of affairs we tried our herdent until nightfall to discover a way out of the snow-filled gorge, We were, howarer, unsuccessful, and had to Camp in a raging snowstorm at an altitude of 19,500 feet in the bed of a frozen stream. The minimum temperatura was 4. degrees Fabron heit, and before the night had passed five donkeys, one pony and o, e yuk had died. We had, therefore, to retrace our steps to the Keria Darya, following a new route."

TURNED BACK BY TIBETANS.

Dealing with the hostility of the, Tibetans, Dr. Zugmayer continued: "The first attemp to interfere with us was made by two Tibetang, who had been sent out to warn us and order as to stop. I paid no attention to their request, and we want off our way. Two days later, however, aix urined men, headed by an official, appeared on the scene and threatened to shoot n if we refused to turn back.

"Qui armament consisted of three carbines two pistols, and three guns, of which it was quite obricus the Tibetans were much afraid, so they confined themselves to accompanying is and continuing their threats. On the follow ing diy we camped near the village of Noh, half a day's march from Radok, and to our dis- may were confronted with 20 armed men, whose number was being constantly augment. ed by groups of twos and threes.

"Messengers with news of our arrival were
