Canton, 16th February. The newly-appointed Lieutenant Turlar General Li Kwok Git, a grandson of the late Li Hong-chang, arrived at Canton on the 9th instant at noon on the Chinese gunboat Frk. Po and was received on the Tien Tax wharf by the Prefect of Kwangchow, Magistrate of Nam boi and Punyl and others. The Viceroy and the Tartar General called on the Lieutenant Tanar General on the following day. The Lieutenant Tarlar General took over the 'scal of office on the afternoon of the day of landing. NEW YEAR GREETINGS.
The Consuls of the different countries re.) presented in Canton yesterday called on II.E. the Viceroy to offer their greetings to H.E. on the occasion of the Chinese New Year. The Commissioners of Customs and Posts also called on H.E. for the same purpose,
THE NEW BUND,
To-day H., the Viceroy sent Wei-yuan (o in company with the weiyuan in charge of the construction of the new hund to confer with the local representative of Messrs. Howarth, Erskine & Co., engineers, Shimees, on mailers in connection with the resumption of the construction of the hund. It is reported that H.E. desires to place this undertaking in the hands of foreign engineers.
UNNECESSARY ALARM.
On the closing of the last Chinese year, learning from a secret informant that a num- ber of revolutionaries contemplated raising a rebellion on the last day of the old year and that the editor of the Chinese paper Yee Shuf Shat Kee Pan was among them, Admiral Li Chun at once.communicated with the Viceroy, and accordingly the editor of the said paper was arrested. Afterward the editor was released on a guarranice from the Canton community. The Viceroy had instructed all officers and police to take extra care in the exercise of their duties, especially on the last day of the last year. The Tariar General; was also 're- quested to give instructions to the Banner troops to be ready for emergencies. The old year, however, closed peacefully and no dis- turbances of any kind happened.
THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS. ·
The Chinese New Year holidays passed off very quietly this year. The different steamers in port ware "dressed for the occasion and much firing, of crackers indu'ged in, The weather has been very cold, but so far rain has kept off Business was, as usual, completely suspended and a fresh start will be made on the eighth or ninth day.

Provided the "clerk, of the weather" is lenient with us lo-morrow there is no reason why the first day's racing of the Hongkong Jockey Club's forthcoming meeting should not be as sporting as those which, have passed into history.
