The mob broke into, the jail and quickly overcame, the resistence of Sheriff Shermer bom. Many of the loading citizen of the town were in the crowd. They made no attempt to disguise themselves.

Cullen, fought hard: He declared that his wife and son bad autached him and that he had killed them in self defence.

Four or five ministers and a large number of women accompanied the lynching party.

Man who participated in the affair slated to-night that they did not fear, prosecution.

They said they disliked mob violence but they considered execution, was justiñable in the case of Cullen, They declared the estate of $50,000 which bo bad accumulated, would have been used to fight his case in the courts, and that it would have been years before he was punished.

Cullen killed his wife with a knife, and going to where the boy, James. Eastman, was sleeping, attacked him. The boy battled bravely with his father and gained possession of the weapon. Boarders in the house were aroused, as was also Cullen's brother, Richard Callen, a banker at Warren, It.

Richard Cullen, Prof. Rudd and Royal Jacobe took the 'knife' away from Collen and the boy started to town to summon the marshal, Callen then shot him twice, killing him in-

stantly. Cullen then attempted to kill himself by shooting.

Cullen was always known as a man of bad temper and was somewhat eccentric. He was 60 years old.
