Under the escort of Chief Dingman, Cap- tain Holliday mada'a tour of the city's fird stations yesterday, accompanied by. Mr. John A. Muckay, of Armstrong and Mackay, who, was captain of the Sacta, Cruz fire station in the Spanish days.
Captain Holliday observed everything that was shown him with great care, took copious notes and asked innumerable questions. He went through the nations, from top to bottom and made himself familiar with everything: At the San Nicholas fire station several practice hitches were made for Captain. Holliday's benefit, and he was visibly surprised when he saw a three horse hitch made in 11 seconds,
Captain Holliday remarked to Chief Ding, 94,187,909.86 | man that the horses and engines were very.

SINGAPORE'S POSITION AND
SITS IMPORTANĊE.
H.E. THE GOVERNOR'S COUNSELS,
At the smoking concert of the Singapore Volunteer Corps, held at the Drill Hall on the 36th u, H.E. the Governor, at the invitation of Col. Broadrick ascended the platform to pre sent the shooting prizes during an interval. This pleasing fitile ceremony accomplished, the Governor delivered an address of some considerable weight, and l is to be hoped His Excellency's important counsels will bear fruit among the Colony's young manhood;
At the commencement, H.E, referred with regret to one phase in the report upon the Volunteer Corps here-Ponr shoating on the part of a large number of "civilian soldiers," It was a sime of things he was extremely sorry had to be recorded; for he could not impress 100 strongly upon the Vajunteers the vital necessity of straight shooting. Singapore, he £1,000,000 10,000,000.00 reminded them, was a very important place, Bills discounted, loans and cre
bow important it was he thought perkaps many ................................... 93,039.746.29 | failed in realise. It was the Gateway of the 99,934,593-40 | East, and the East was a place which would

with the advance of time become a centre And since of great and growing power. $264,097,776.28
Singapore was its key, nations look with longing eyes upon it and coveted it. They would be noly too glad to see it pass from our hands. He might say he did not think this was at alla likely eventuality, but yet the fact of Singapore's position and its value, and there were those who would like to get it for themselves was something to be remembered. The Europeans bere of course would stand to lose everything, but then there were others of its inhabitants, people, who were born here, Eurasians, Chinese and others, who would also siand something 100. They had known the many advantages which came of living under British rule, and, they should all become efficient so that if it ever became necessary they would be able to fight for them. (Hoar, hear). Shooting, good shooting was essential 968,766.01 for any Volunteer, and he added that it would 750,000.00 be murder to pat untrained men into a firing lipe. Let them not be afraid that Government 1.721,558.90 would be unable to stand the increased capitation grants due to this increased effi- 84,433,102.68
ciency. In the event of the latter they would be granted readily. The Legislative Council never grudged the votes for the Volunteers, He reminded them finally that they had an excellent Adjutant and should endeavour to be worthy of him. (Loud applause.)
