A representative of the Omka Mainichƒ has obtained a "New Year interview" 'with Mr. Matsuoka, Minister for Agriculture and Com. the Papan Chronicle. The merce, says Minister has many aspirations in regard to the administration of agricultur, om- merce and industry during 1907. He is very much interested in the question of the re- adjustment of arable land and the furtherance of industry. Japan, he poined out, has been looking to foreign countries yently for the sup. ply of rice to the value of between Ys0,000,0on, ́in addition to about Y14,900,000, of wheat;and four. During the past ten years the production of rice had been increased by 10,000,000 koku This increase might be chiefly attributed to the improvement in the method" of cultiva tion, as shown by the fact that the increase In the area of the rice fields during that period had been not more than 100,000 cho or 250,000 acres. But the' readjustment of the land under cultivation was undoubtedly the most important factor for checking the im- | portation of foreign rice..
