THE SHARE MARKET IN THE
SOUTHWA
(rath-January.) While it cannot be denied that Hongkong investors are keenly interested in Shanghai stocks, the same cannot be said to hold good as regards Singapore Investments. And as an evidence that the feeling in respect of the Southern Settlement is reciprocal we need only quote the remark of a Singapore firm of brokers, Messrs. Latham & Co., which occur in their review of the shara market during the past year. They observe: -"Several Hongkong companies which wo formerly quoted have been taken out of our list, as we found, with the large increase in local concerns, there was little or no interest taken in them now. We have therefore only retained our premier Bank, the Fire and Marinc, Docks, and Shipping Com panies which still interest a certain section of the community." It is stated that, with few exceptions, 1996 was a prosperous year for local mines, which is rather an unusual experience for Investors and speculators alike in Singapore, and rubber companies have also done well, although prices bave ruled lower. An interesting remark is made in connection with industrial stocks. It is stated that in Singapore industrials, except in a few cases, have not flourished, and they cannot be said to be worked on the same sound basis as the Hongkong companies, for they do not meet with the same success, but taking the market all round, investors and speculators have seen a considerable advance in their holdings, and have every reason to be satisfied with their year's work. A lengthy statement is made with regard to the loss, the market has sustained during the year by the withdrawal of her first-born," the Tanjong Pagar Deck Co., Ltd., in which transactions practically ceased after the announcement of the award in July. Messra, Latham & Co. admit that the award must have gratified the larger shareholders and also the speculators who had never held a share for investment during the forty years of the company's existence, but they assert that it
has not done the small, shareholder much good, while the public is left with only one industrial company which may be termed gilt-edged stock. The company referred to

"And if they came quietly and without all the porp, parade and pretension which characterized a fetent excursion which shall be nameless they may be sure of a genuine and bearty reception both here and in the Philippines.
the award was announced "From firel to last it has been a blundering business, the net resalt of which is that the shareholders of Tanjong Pagare have been enriched, through the folly of the Government, at the expense of the Colony, and owing to the price awarded them, there is no chance of the coal or any other charges being reduced at present, so the expropriatlon scheme which was to help the trade of the Colony does not seem at all likely to do so for some years to come." With regard to the future of the Singapore share market the prospects are said to be bright, which is, at all events, something to be thankful for in these harder times. On the whole, Hongkong investors have not much capie to be envious of Singa pore or to regret their home and Shanghai.||| investments: AMATEU
