By a recent Imperial Dector, li E. Ko Feng hit was recalled from his appointment as the Governor of Kwangsi and allowed to retain his post as Director-General of the home grown oplum tax administration, for the provinces of | Klangsu, | Kiangai, Ashui, Hup h, Hunan
Szechuan, Kwangtong and Kwapistas utcal | with Chêng Yi-lao (who was recently, appoint d in his place), as his assistapt. Both of hese-Director-General and Deputy Director General-will have their headquarters at Wa ching, capital of Hupeh.
According to a recent memorial from the Director-General, the largest amount of tax collected during the last year was about El 3,000,000. from Szechuan, while the total yearly revenue would amount to something like Tls. 15,000,000 or a little more if the administration is properly managed hereafter.
Thus in addition to the several millions of dollars of revenue collected every year from Indian opium, by the 1. M. the Chinese
Government will have to devise means and ways to make up the enormous deficit of fully Tis. 20,000,000 if the anti-gpiem reform is actually adopted in the Empire. In view¦ of the general shortage of funds in the various provinces 1 am at a loss to know by --what methods the Chinese authorities, who are for the most part, ignorant about fiosocial affairs can make good this immense loss of revenue from both foreign and, native drugs.) has your correspondent has been informed by a reliable Chinese official bere that in view:

of the gravity of the opium question the Government has wired to the Viceroys, Gov- ernors and Tartar Generals advising them to furnish their final opinions and say, definite- ly whether the evil can be entirely, stamped out in their respective provinces within the len years' period as fixed by Imperial Decree, that is to say, they may ask for an extension of the date, if any of them find it difficult to stop the | harmful trade within thair jurisdictions doring the fixed period. These poines are quite a pigmy race, for when full grown they only rango, from 28.to,30. inches in height--just the size for a youngster learning to ride. Long-haired and shaggy- hended, they are delightful little creatures, ex- traordinarily, affectionate and intelligent, and withal as lame as rabbit bred in captivity.
A Morning Leader representativo,,wbo, went to look at Mr. Jamrach's collection of wild and wonderful creatures in St. George's st., East, found half a dozen of these hardy little crea-,| lures, fresh from the iceland boat, scampering. round the square, thoroughly enjoying a romp with some of the youngsters of the East-end.
"Yes, they're pretty little things;now," said Mr. Jamrach, carrying one of the ponies in his arms, "but when they've been washed and
they'll be a Christmas-box which any little prince will be proud of"
