'LOSSES TO THE INSURANCE COMPANIES:
Late week we published a louter telegram stating that damage to the extent of a quarter of a million sterling had been caused by a serious conflagration in Bangkok. From ex changes, we gather that this must have been the culminating point of a series of big blazes. In its issuo of December 17, the Bangkok Times reports:— q

Shortly after elevan o'clock, the fire alarm was given, and those who took the trouble to gel up say from the dense clouds of smoke and faman that it was not simply a single hovel being demolished. The arrow lanes between the Talat Noi market and the river, densely populated, and packed with flimsily-built wooden houses, undoubtedly add much to the risk of fire, and when once property is alight there it is very difficult to save it. Last night's fire, which broke out near the main street The Tsar has issued a rescript, on the oc-through Talat Noi, spread with alarming casion of the Russian New Year, in which rapidity, and at 11.80 quite a large area was he thanks M. THE BRITISH LEAD.
We have carefully taken out the tonnage and number of vessels making use of the port dur- ing the last month of the 'year, and find the 'total ships of all nations arriving amounted to '434, with an aggregats tonnage of 571,633.
Of this total so% of the vessels and nearly. 53% of the tonnage, as will be seen below, were British, after excluding these under the Sarawak Aage
The average tonnage is largest in the case of vesseli flying the Jpanese flag, these compris ing chiefly the large boats of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, but this does not necessarily mean that the Japanese are the largest boats but simply that there are no coasters of this nationality to reduce the average,
The German tonnage amounting to a little over a fourth of the British makes a bad second, but some of the largest class of boats are Ger man, and one the,s.s. Bulow, which arrived oo the gth it, has the secord entry-5,224 tons nelt register.

Nor will bis amusement be neglected, for he is to have the best tiger shoot. ing and small game and wild fowl shooting that India can boast placed at his disposal,
