All day stately mansion, a
With a crown of glittering towers, A lonely maid sat in silence,
Ill'at ease with the tiresome habra,
At times, she would start and listen,
With a look of agony?
As she caught the low, deep murmur,
That came from the restless Hoo.
And now, as the sun was setting,
At the close of that fair day, She heard a fisherman' singing,
As he furled bisbaits in the bay:
And voices of happy children,
That hastened to greet their sire, She heard, and saw through a window
The gleams of★ coliage fre.
She thought of the wife that waited-3. To welcome her husband there; And her heart was filled with anguish,
And she cried in deep despair:
"I am a nobleman's daughter,
And she, a fisherman's wife,
·Yet toiling in storm and sunshine,
She lives a far happier life."

The word at the hand of this article has several meanings, but its olgin according to the dictionaries has no remoter source than early modern English. "To tip" originally meant to hit lightly; derivatively it came to mean the act of throwing lightly a copper cold to the recipient of your bounty. By a later ex- ansion the term was applied to douceurs bestowed on dependants, and by a still later extension to the hints which sporting prophets- (for a consideration) "lightly throw" to their clients. "Tipping" has a family connection with the medieval practice of great lords to scatter largesse among their retainers, but this old time munificence has been whittled down to the modern, habit of giving small gifts of money to-servitors and other humble folk whe

The barbaric ostentation of the rulers of that dynasty survives only aï a historic reminiscence, but "bicksheesh" will endure as an Eastern fastitution long after the architectural moan ments of the Mogul raiṛaps shall have crambled to dust and oblivion. "Dostor" is another synonym for "backsheesh," which no Eastern trader neglects to ask for on the con- clusion of a big deal, and Westerners, re- cognising the inviolability of an old Eastern custom, da nut cavil at the extortion,
The practice of tipping is not an Eastern monopoly. The blandishments of the British commercial traveller would be wasted without "tip" to ab intending bayer. Sometimes it takes the shape of a case of champagne, at nthers bumble entertainment at a public house, but the tipping is always there, as employer know it and pass his bill for expenses without question as long as bis returns are adequate.
