WRECK WAS CAUSED BY A RUBBER SAIL.

CAPT, ARTHUR GEWELL SPINS-A YARN OF THE OLD DAYS ON THE BEA.

Many explanations have been given by 181 captains, but the way in which Capt. Arthur Sewell, one of the best known pilots on the Sound, lost his ship Rolling Home in '83, off the coast of Sumatra, is unique.

“We had been trading at Calcutta and took ́n'load of jute and other stuff,” ́iaid he "We also had on board a shipment of india robber." When about one hundrer miles off the const of Sumatra wo' ran into a aimoon. It look every sail off the ship, but, luckily, it left tip icks standing. We had been out from hom hout two years then, and didn't have any extra canvas. I put the sailmaker to work and had ni topsail and 't'gallants'i made out of rubber, We bent them and they did pretty nicely.

"Three' days later, however, we ran into nnotber blow. It came up so suddenly - that we didn't have time to take în soything." The ship went ahead at about fifteen knots an hour. She was one of the old clippers and could go

same.

The sails, however, kept on stretching, I expected them to go. But they merely kept ⠀ stretching. The foretops'l was the biggest, and it stretched all that day until it was about five. miles ahead of the ship and as taut as a bow string. By that time we ware getting close to Sumatra. The end of the sail stretched until it wis entirely out of sight. Then the wind want Optional Cargo will be forwarded unless notice to the contrary be given before TO-down. It dropped calm all of a sudden. - Now' DAY.

what do you think bappened? The sad of the sail had stretched about ten miles abend of tr and caught on a cliff on the island. As soon as the wind fell calm the cobber started to con fract. It took the ship through the water at a fourteen-knot clip and we soon saw the coast.

"Without a minutezo

spare will dropped into the dinkey and watched the ship go to-the cliffs. There were rugged cliffs there and the old vessel was drawn against them by the rubber with a force which smashed her into pieces no bigger than my hand.

*That was the way I lost my ship.”

Any Cargo impeding her discharge will be Inuded into the hazardous and/or extra hazardous Godowns of the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Co, Limited, and stored at Con- signees' risk and expense.

Passage tickets and through Bills of Lading isshed for above ports, and for Australia with prompt transhipment at Colombo.
