A TURF ENTHUSIAST.'

GREAT DEVELOPMENTS.

The sugar refining industry in Japan has made much progress in recent years. The prio lopment are Altributed to an increased con sumption in the country, the increasing demand tection of the induitry in Formess. Despite the opinion which was expressed to the contrary, in some quarten, optimistic views seem to be generally entertained amongst those who are concerned in the business as to the future of the. industry. Hitbarto the large sugar manufac" turers in Japan bave been the Nippon Selseito Kaisha, of Tokyo, the Nippon Seilo Kaisba, of Osaka, the Dairi and the Formosa Seite Kaisha, Their total capital up to last last year, did not exceed Y9,500,000. The first and second com. panic mentioned above have since amalga mated and the capital has been increased from Y5.50,000 to Y13,000,000. The Formpra.com- pany has also increased the capital of Y1,000,000 to Y,000,000 while the Daiti concem is con- templating laking a similar step and bringing up his capital to Y4,000,000. The capitalisation of these companies will stand thus:-

MORE FREIGHT RATES LOWERED.

Since the Nippou Yusen Kaisha opened its

seen, in the direction of the South Sen Islands, war, several Japanese steamship owners have

operations. According te vernacular contem poraries, says the Japan Chronicle, the quanti, ty of Rangoon rice contracted for importation into Japan amounted to about 700,000 tona, of which 10,000 tons have already been brought over. Early next year tea-large, steamers, be tween 3,507 and 5,500 100s, will be sent to ship the remainder of the rice, and the Osaka Shosen Kaisha alio intends to send steamers with a similar object., Hearing of this, Mestra. Jardine, Matheson & Co, Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, and other foreign firms, who have hither. to almost monopolised the steamship service.id that quarter, are, according to vernacular re ports, prepared to run in competition and these companies have lowered the freight rates from about 40 sen to 35: sen per picul. At present the Japanese steamer Konju Maru is engaged -After

in the transport of rice between Saigon, Singaex Increase.pore, Hongkong, Mauila and Canton, and four Y5,500,000 ¥12,000,000 or five Japanese steamers are going out to 4,00,000 trade in the neighbourhood of Java and Suma- 1,000,000 5,000,000 tra, while great activity of Japanese steamers.

Besides these, there are several other smaller Lugar maufacturing companies that have been established or are under project with a capital under Yon,000, but these have been left out, When the increased capital of account of the old and the capital of the new companies are put together a total is formed of $25,000,000, which, compared with the capitalisation of Y6,500,000 at the end of last year, shows an increment of 370 per cent. The condition of the sugar industry in japan, as judged by the amount of capital in vested, is as follows:-"
