A GREAT SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY.

Of all the various species of 1odents, xats are “the most repulsive. They are also a source of considerable danger to mankind. In addition to the devastation they effect, they are r “sponsible, among other evils, for the spreading of the bubonic plague. This plague is originat ed by a bacillus common to fleas with which. rats in India are infested, and 'as these abbor. rent animals abound in that country, needless to say the inhabitants, regard them with little less apprehension than famine itself. The in habitants of every civilised country have sustained considerable loss through these rodents. In Germany, the toss thus effacied

during one year alone exceeded £10,000,000 in Great Britain it is estimated to exceed £10,000,000, and in Denmark 400,000 per andum. Traps of all kinds have been invented to effect their capture, but the canning animals quickly realise the purpose intended, and most devices have proved of little utility.

EFFOLIS TOWARDS EXTERMINATION, Even although the rais had not avoided the

traps, the difficulty of attempting to keep them by such means is obviously manifest" when regard is had, to the fecundity of these rodents, which multiply at the rate of 8oo per acoum from one pair. Strychnine and arsenic have also been employed. Other animals, however," iaadvertently partake of those poisons, and as This remedy proves more costly than the evil, it has to be abandoned. Another drawback I the purgeat odour which emanates from the poisoned carcases, which becomes such a nuisance that sometimes buildings have bad to be entirely gutted and reconstructed. All ef- furia to exterminate rats by these means have proved futile. Several Governments have be. Death was not instantaneous. Inflammation

ut first set in, and this was followed by a fever

of a like form to virulent typhus. When the fever reached an acute stage the rals crept from their burrows and expired in the open. A most remarkable feature of the test was that no stench was noticed to arise from the dead Lodies of rate or mice. The tests proved"be" < yond doubt that this scientific discovery was the means of eradicating immense colonies of rats from greatly infested areas. In a few isolated cses the poison was not entirely successful. The cause was traced to the fact that certain

species were immune from the effects, because of their exceptionally strong resisting powers, but such rats were inoculated with a more - ștringent preparation called "Ratinis,” and to

it they succumbed,

AN IMPERIAL RESCRIPT,

Ever ready to discourage unsound schemes, the, German Government are equally emphatic in stimulating scientific research and encour

aging the use of discoveries of such high- Iconomic and hygienic Importance. This is evidenced by the following Rescript issued by the Imperial Minister of Agriculture, Berlin, on February 20, 1900 ¦---

For the destruction of rats and mice the. "Ratin" Company (Limited), of Copenhagen, has recently employed a preparation—"Ratin" containing cultures of bacilli in liquid or solid form. In order to test the efficacy and practical use of "Rain," the Chamber of Agri. culture for the Province of Saxony has made exhaustive trials in its own Bacteriological In- stitute, as well as on'a numi er of farms. The results of these experiments ...ya now come to haod, and show that:"Ratin," when applied in solid liquid cultures, causes among the rats (even in cases where ordinary poisons failed) a deadly epidemic, which kill off most, of the animals, reaching often 100 per cent. The cultures, which are readily eaten by the rats, are easilý .. applied, and in marked contrast to the usual ordinary poisons, are quite harmless to all domestic animals. In consequence of the suc cesses that have so far been achieved with' "Ratio," the Chamber of Agriculture in Halle will in future prepare cultures of "Ratin” at ila; own Laboratory ready for use, and so enable farmers to destroy rats by means of a remedy which is at once successful and easily applied. You are requested to take steps for making this remedy known, and encouraging its being used,

(Signed) THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE,

THE APPLICATION OF THE REMEDY

'IN ENGLAND.

Similar tests were made by other foreign Governments with equally successful results. In each case the respective Government did not hesitate to give its sostinted praise. * Fortified with these successes, the Director of the Bacteriological Laboratory opened an. office at 17, Gracechurch-street, B.C., where fuller particulars may be obtained. Although rats do most damage in the country, and do not abound so much in towns and cities, they nevertheless cause considerable damage hotela, factories, and other establishments. Their extinction from these quarters is no less to be desired, especially when regard is bad to the fact that enormous quantities of food aro contaminated by them. To obviate that r HONGKONG TELEGRAPH Co., La. pulsive and dangerous nuisance is now a com- paratively simple task, and for this mankind cannot be too thinksal to those scientists who have discovered the wonderful, preparation of "Ralin."--Pall Mall Gassite:
